Better Enjoyed Than Hidden
The Butternut Gallery & Second Story Books is supporting the library and historical society with the first exhibition of its 2012 season by contributing a portion of their sales commission to the organization. Better Enjoyed Than Hidden – Collectors' Work, is an exhibit of items offered by regional collectors of art and craft. These collectors are delighted to part with items in support of a fun idea and this incredibly important county institution. The work being offered is diverse and of high quality.
Of special interest for the Susquehanna County Historical Society and Free Library Association are works from the Cope Family who were instrumental in founding the organization's home. Six charcoal drawings by Alexis Thomas Cope (1850 – 1883) will be available thanks to the Cope family. Alexis was the grandson of Thomas P. Cope who built the original Cope House at Woodbourne in Dimock and brother to Clementine Cope who was one of the original donors to the establishment of the library building. Available also are Japanese watercolors acquired by Anna Hartshorne, a relative of the Copes who was a Quaker Missionary teacher in Japan as well as numerous charming watercolors acquired in the 1860's by Alexis, Caroline, Clementine and Annette Cope while visiting Europe.
The exhibit consists of a wide variety of medium and style and seasoned buyers as well as new collectors will find something of interest. Works in clay by Jack Troy, Jordan Taylor, William Tersteeg, Robert Bergstrasser, Nan Burti, Christina Belford and Mark Hewitt, paintings by Alphonse Shelton, Rodrica Tilley, Styvesant Van Veen, Phillip Young, Orazio Salati, prints by Sister Corita Kent, Robert Marx and Donna Dragos as well as weaving, photography, collage and several items by artists unknown will be available.
The Butternut Gallery & Second Story Books is located at 204 Church Street in the Truman Lacey Building on the second floor. This exhibit is open now through May 12, 2012. During this exhibit, hours are Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 11 – 5 p.m. For additional information please call 570-278-4011.

MONTROSE – Rep. Sandra Major (R-Susquehanna/Wyoming/Wayne), in partnership with the Department of Veterans Affairs, is bringing much-needed accessible services to veterans in the Montrose area on Monday, April 23, through its mobile vet center.
