Montrose Blood Drive Set For March 29

MONTROSE, PA - The community partnership that formed when Cabot Oil & Gas Corporation, GasSearch Drilling Services Corporation [GDS] and the American Red Cross joined forces just got stronger. The partnership that has collected 675 units of blood in the past, announced that they will hold another blood drive on March 29 at GDS offices in Montrose.

“We could not be more grateful to Cabot and GDS for the leadership and support they provide to our life-saving mission,” said Theresa M. Blank, Account Manager of the American Red Cross in Endicott City, NY. “Having enthusiastic and generous GDS and Cabot employees stand behind us in our community-based efforts makes all the difference.”

The partnership between the American Red Cross, Cabot and GDS has resulted in dozens of separate blood drives throughout the region. Montrose High School, Susquehanna Community High School, Elk Lake High School and other sites in the Susquehanna and Montrose communities has helped to exceed the unit goals set by the American Red Cross. Blood units collected at each drive are delivered to a Red Cross blood component laboratory where it is processed into several components (e.g., red blood cells, plasma, platelets and/or cryoprecipitate). A single blood donation may help up to three different people, according to the American Red Cross.

“We are so pleased to be helping to make a difference by working with such a strong partners like GDS and the American Red Cross,” stated George Stark, External Affairs Director at Cabot Oil & Gas Corporation. “The need is constant and our community contribution is important for a healthy and reliable blood supply in Susquehanna County. It is gratifying to see everyone working together to help save lives.”

The March 29 blood drive begins at 3:00 p.m. and will conclude at 7:00 p.m. GDS is located at 13971 State Route 706 in Montrose. Please call 570-278-7118 to set up an appointment to donate.

The March 29 blood drive will be co-sponsored by Cabot Oil & Gas Corporation and GasSearch Drilling Services Corporation. The companies will once again encourage its employees - and those of its contractors and subcontractors - to participate in the event and ensure that the drive is a success.

The American Red Cross of Susquehanna and Wyoming Counties is a humanitarian organization led by volunteers that will provide relief to victims of disasters and help people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies. The chapter is located in Montrose at 18 Public Ave. and its Tunkhannock location is housed in the Wyoming County Emergency Operations Center.

Burn Ban For Susq. County

The Susquehanna County Board of Commissioners, in cooperation with the County Fire Chiefs and the Pennsylvania Bureau of Forestry, District 11, has issued a resolution for a temporary ban on open burning in Susquehanna County from 12:01 a.m. Saturday, March 24 to 12:01 a.m. Monday, April 23.

Open burning is defined as the ignition and burning of any combustible material, such as garbage, leaves, grass, twigs, litter, paper, vegetative matter from clearing land or any sort of debris, either in a burn barrel or on the ground. Controlled burning done by the fire departments is allowed under this resolution. Fire department personnel and apparatus must be at the site of the burn. Propane grills, gas stoves, charcoal briquette grills and the use of tobacco in any form is not covered under this act. Campfires are allowed in fire rings in Federal or Department of Environmental Protection licensed campgrounds.

The resolution makes a violation of the open burning ban a summary offense, punishable by fines of up to $100 for the first offense, $200 for the second offense and $300 for the third offense. The act is enforced by local and state police officers.

Charlene Moser, Susquehanna County EMA Coordinator said due to the unseasonably warm, dry winter with very little snow pack, all Susquehanna County fire chiefs requested a temporary burn ban through the Bureau of Forestry. The fire companies are looking out for the safety of the residents in their communities.

If you should have any questions regarding the burn ban please contact the Fire Chief of your local fire company.

Visitors Bureau Announces Deadline

Tunkhannock - Events that take place between April 1 and September 30, 2012, are now being accepted for the Endless Mountains Visitors Bureau 2012 Spring-Summer Calendar of Events brochure. The deadline to submit an event is March 23.

Any public event that is sponsored by a community or non-profit organization can be submitted for the upcoming calendar free of charge. The event should be something a visitor to the area would be interested in, and must take place in the Endless Mountains Region - Bradford, Sullivan, Susquehanna and Wyoming counties.

To get an event in the calendar, go to www.EndlessMountains.org and click on “Add Event” on the bottom right of the homepage. After filling out the online form, click “add event” at the bottom of the page.

The event information will be reviewed by the visitors bureau staff and placed on the bureau’s website once approved. The bureau reserves the right to edit and/or delete any submission.

Since recent website problems have caused a delay in the calendar production, the printed brochure will include events beginning April 15.

Events happening between April 1 and 15 should still be submitted, as the bureau will be promoting these events through other advertising avenues throughout the year.

This year, the bureau has added additional features to event listings. There is now an option to write a long and short description of an event. The short description - held to a maximum of 250 characters - allows you to point out the highlights of an event. This will be in the printed brochure. The long description, which will be on our website only, gives you the opportunity to provide even more details about the event - things you weren’t able to include in the short description.

Also new, every event listed on the website can now be enhanced with a color photo. All you have to do is choose a photo that best depicts what your event is all about and upload it along with the submittal form. Photos will not be in the printed events brochure.

Those without access to the Internet should contact the bureau and request a calendar of events form. Events must be submitted online or on the form provided by the bureau to ensure accuracy. Events that have multiple dates that are not consecutive must be submitted individually (example: a performance given on Oct. 3, 10, 17, and Nov. 7 would need to be submitted four times).

For more information, contact the bureau at 836-5431, 800-769-8999, or shelley@endlessmountains.org.

EMCC Begins Spring Semester

The Endless Mountains Children’s Choir has started its spring semester with rehearsals on Thursdays from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the South Gibson United Methodist Church. All children who love to sing are invited to join the choir.

Varied styles of music are taught to the children, which include classical, folk songs, gospel, spirituals, sacred, contemporary, Broadway, popular and multicultural music from many countries. The children have sung songs in 13 different languages as well as performed music in American sign language. They are offered opportunities to audition for and participate in various honors choirs such as the American Choral Directors All Eastern Division Children’s Honors Choir, All Eastern Division Jr. High Honors Choir, National Children’s Honor Choir, ACDA-PA All State Women’s High School Honors Choir and ACDA-PA All State Men’s High School Honors Choir. Students have represented the Endless Mountains Children’s Choir in these honor choirs.

As a community choir, the children perform at various community events throughout the year, and are especially involved in performances during the holiday season. They have performed twice at the National Christmas Tree in Washington D.C. and have done a holiday performance a the capital in Harrisburg three times. The choir was the first children’s choir to perform at West Point at the Kosciusko Day Observance.

The children receive training in vocal technique, proper breath control, posture, phrasing, musicianship, vowel pronunciation, expression, musical interpretation and historical background in the repertoire they are performing. They are also taught a cappella singing (singing without piano or instrumental accompaniment) in which their voices must blend and they must develop a good sense of pitch and level of vocal dynamics to maintain their independent vocal parts (2, 3 or 4). All children are encouraged to develop their talents as a soloist - they are all given the opportunity to sing solo parts in the concerts.

So, if you have a child or children who love to sing, please give them this unique musical experience of a lifetime to join other children in sharing in the joy of music. For more information, or if you have any questions, please contact Dr. Christine Plonski-Sezer, artistic director/founder, at 570-756-2729 or drcsezer@yahoo.com. Rehearsals are Thursdays, 6:00-8:00 p.m., at the church. Choir robes are provided for the children at no cost. When rehearsal is canceled, members are notified by phone or e-mail. Choir manager is Mr. Boyd Manzer, 570-756-3047.
