Reading Time At The Mall

Celebrity readers, entertaining characters, fun craft activities, and a free book to take home is what the Northeastern Pennsylvania Reading Association (NPRA) has for kids. This year their annual event will be at the Mall at Steamtown on Saturday, February 25, from 10:15 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. It is a free event for children of all ages to enjoy listening to celebrity readers such as Tom Clark and Peggy Lee from WNEP; Candice Kelly and Drew Speier from WBRE; The Mayor of Scranton; and children’s authors Irene Breznak, Lindsay Barrett George and Patricia Thomas. In addition the Penn State Lion will be there along with book character Amos McGee.

WNEP’s meteorologist, Tom Clark, reads the book “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs” to a group of children during Reading Time at the Mall. The Northeastern PA Reading Association presents this free celebrity read annually to all children in the area.

Students majoring in education from the University of Scranton and Keystone College will be on hand with a variety of crafts for the kids to make. Every child who listens to a story will receive a free book.

This is just one of the many events which NPRA offers to children, families, teachers and schools in the area. Upcoming professional development sessions planned include “Making Book Characters Come Alive” for families and teachers by Cindy G. Reynolds at the Scranton Public Library on March 8 and the Wayne County Library on April 12. “Supporting the Development of Social Skills in Students with Autism” will be presented at the NEIU on March 21 by Elaine Geroulo.

In its quest to support excellence in education of future teachers, NPRA will award a $500.00 scholarship to a qualified student member of the association. The student must be enrolled as a third year education major in a four year program at a local college or university.

NPRA also supported the Dresses for Africa Project conducted by the Penn State Extension in Susquehanna County by providing funds to ship the dresses and books to the Children and Youth Empowerment Centre in Nyeri, Kenya. The center is a dynamic and innovative residential and educational program for street dwelling children who need clothes to wear so they can attend school.

Plan to bring your children, your nieces and nephews, your grandchildren, or your friends’ children to Reading Time at the Mall for a fun time for everyone.
