Pickett Announces February Hours
TOWANDA - Staff from Rep. Tina Pickett’s (R-Bradford/Sullivan/Susquehanna) district offices will be available each Wednesday of the month to help residents of Susquehanna and Sullivan counties access important state government services.
“Once the Pennsylvania Supreme Court certifies the maps for new legislative districts, the 110th will expand into more territory in Susquehanna County,” Pickett said. “While the new districts will take effect immediately, my staff and I will be working with Rep. Sandra Major and her staff to ensure a smooth transition for the residents who will be affected. In the meantime, I encourage anyone to stop by or call these satellite offices for any assistance they may need with state government services or questions.”
As a result of the redistricting process, the 110th District will likely gain Lathrop and Springville townships as well as Friendsville and Hop Bottom boroughs. Forest Lake Township and Jessup Township will be assigned to the 111th District, currently served by Major.
In Susquehanna County, Pickett’s staff will be available from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month - February 8 and 22. The office is located on State Route 706 at Flynn’s Consignment Shop in Lawton. The site was formerly Cavallaro’s grocery store. The office can be reached by calling (570) 934-2557.
Likewise, Sullivan County residents can visit Pickett’s satellite office at the Sullivan County Courthouse in Laporte on the first and third Wednesdays of the month from 1:30 - 3:30 p.m. on February 1 and 15. The phone number there is (570) 946-7673.
Pickett operates her main full-time offices at 321 Main St., Towanda, phone (570) 265-3124 and 106 West Packer Ave., Sayre, phone (570) 888-9011. More information is available 24 hours a day on Pickett’s website at RepPickett.com.

Timeline For Closure Of Marian Community
Carbondale, Pa. - On November 28, 2011 Maxis Health System, the parent company of Marian Community Hospital, announced plans to close the hospital by February 28, 2012. Since the notification, Maxis officials have been collaborating with the Commonwealth’s Department of Health (DOH) to develop a timeline to ensure a safe continuum of care for patients utilizing the facility during its final weeks of operation.
“It is necessary for us to cease admissions to both our Behavioral Health and Medical/Surgical Units prior to the actual closure date. This will allow adequate time for final discharges or transfers,” stated Mary Theresa Vautrinot, president and CEO of Maxis Health System.
Admissions to the inpatient Behavioral Health Unit will not be accepted after January 27. The staff at Marian will be working in conjunction with the DOH and the Department of Public Welfare to ensure all long-term behavioral health patients are discharged no later than February 24. Inpatient admissions for medical/surgical patients will cease on February 17 with anticipated discharge or transfer to another facility by February 23.
Additionally, the Emergency Department will close on February 17 at 7 a.m. Local emergency medical service providers were made aware of the impending closure in early December and have been advised to transport patients to other regional facilities for emergency services as of this date.
“It is very important that patients in need of emergency care realize that as of February 17, Marian Community Hospital will no longer have staffing or resources to meet their needs. We encourage those who have relied upon us to prepare in advance to utilize a neighboring facility offering emergency services on a 24 hour, seven day-a-week basis,” explained Vautrinot.
Five hospitals located within 20 miles of Marian Community Hospital offer emergency services: Mid-Valley Hospital, Peckville; Wayne Memorial Hospital, Waymart; Community Medical Center, Scranton; Moses Taylor Hospital, Scranton; and Regional Hospital of Scranton, Scranton.
Maxis officials are in the process of determining the feasibility of providing urgent care, laboratory and imaging services on the hospital’s current campus after the acute care facility closes. A decision is expected sometime in February.
