Cancer Outreach Center To Open In Montrose

Relay For Life volunteers, the American Cancer Society and Endless Mountains Health Systems are pleased to announce the opening of a cancer outreach center in Montrose.

“With cancer on the rise, this is an ideal time to open a cancer outreach center in Montrose,” stated Peter J. Bell, Coordinator of the Center. “The center will allow community members to meet face-to-face with a volunteer to help guide them through the programs and services available here in Susquehanna County.”

The center will be completely volunteer run with support being provided by the American Cancer Society. Endless Mountains Health Systems has donated use of their training center located at 568 Grow Avenue, next door to the driver license center. The center will be open on the second Tuesday of each month from 6 to 9 p.m. and the third and fourth Sundays of each month from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The official opening date will be January 22 at 12 p.m.

Cancer patients and caregivers may stop by the center to discuss and sign up for services and programs available to them in Susquehanna County through the American Cancer Society and other local agencies. The center will also be open for cancer patients, their families and other interested individuals whom may be interested in learning about volunteer opportunities with the American Cancer Society, such as Road to Recovery (volunteers provide patients with rides to treatment), Daffodil Days and Relay For Life.

For more information on the programs and services, cancer patients and caregivers may call 1-800-227-2345 or visit www.cancer.org.

Transition Upcoming At County Libraries

The Susquehanna County Historical Society and Free Library Association will be transitioning to a new circulation and catalog program, Evergreen, on Monday, January 23. The staff is in the midst of training but will not have access to the live system until Monday. Therefore, they have decided to close to the public on January 23. If all goes well with the transition, the library locations may open during the day, but please call before making a trip.

The transition to a new system means several important changes with the way you check out materials. Following are a few of the changes: videos and DVDs will only circulate for one week as opposed to two, fines for overdue items will be .25 cents per day as DVDs will continue to be 1.00 per day. This means the fines for VHS tapes will decrease. Circulation notices for overdue items will be sent more quickly. If you keep a reading history, you will need to download it from your patron record as it will not be transferred to the new system. Patrons with extended loan periods (such as Homeschool or Books-By-Mail) will need to inform the desk each time they check out in order to receive the extended loan period.

The transition to Evergreen was set by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and will eventually be a state-wide system. Though the entire staff has been training and learning about the new program, it will be new to everyone. Please be patient as everyone learns the ropes!
