Despite not having its top varsity debaters, the Elk Lake Forensics Team still managed to dominate Lincoln-Douglas Debate at the Scranton Catholic Forensics League Tournament at Wallenpaupack Middle School on December 3.
Two first year debaters, junior Matthew Horvath and eighth-grader Kenneth Brittingham closed out finals of Novice LD Debate and placed 1st and 2nd respectively.
Both Horvath, who was in the first tournament of his career, and Brittingham compiled undefeated 3 win and 0 loss records during the preliminary rounds by defeating debaters from Abington Heights, Danville, and Shikellamy high schools.
Their placement was decided based on speaker points given by judges during the preliminary rounds.
“Matt and Ken had a great tournament. Matt only started practicing debate this week and Ken is continuing to improve every week,” commented EL Forensics Director Keith Brosious.
