Walt was a veteran of WWII and is considered, according to his accounting, to be this country’s #1 hero. He entertained his children for many hours with stories of his heroic deeds during the war! Until his retirement he worked as the General Yardmaster on the Erie Lackawanna and Conrail Railroads in the Binghamton yard. He was a gifted stone mason and enjoyed working in many stone quarries with two of his best friends, Frederic Boerner and Joe Tarabulski. Part of his lasting legacy is the beautiful bluestone Veteran’s Monument in Susquehanna as well as stonework on many homes and businesses in the Susquehanna & Broome County areas.
Among his talents were his beautiful bass voice which he lent to the Susquehanna United Methodist Church Choir, the Tri-Cities Opera, the Susquehanna Choral Society and many other musical and theater groups.
Walt was a fixture at the local coffee shops and poker games in his retirement. The family would like to thank his many friends for helping to make his last days pleasant and comfortable. Special thanks go out to his nurses and the staff at Asera Care Hospice for their wonderful care.
