The non-profit National Private Duty Association (NPDA) has announced that it will host a consumer education web conference entitled “Addressing Legal Issues that Impact Seniors” on Sept. 22, at 8 p.m. EST. The live and interactive program will provide advice on elder law matters, including pinpointing when you need to address legal issues, what the implications are, and how to ensure that you and your family are protected. The event is free of charge to participants.
The web conference topics include an overview of elder law issues, powers of attorney, informed consent and guardianship, advance directives, will and trusts, and the timing involved for each.
“Caring for an aging parent brings many challenges,” said Sheila McMackin, president of NPDA. “It’s vital that a family know what legal issues they need to address and the appropriate timing involved. Being knowledgeable of these issues is key to protecting your aging parent, providing the best care possible.”
This event’s presenter is an expert on social work issues, as well as being an attorney. Joseph T. Monahan, M.S.W., A.C.S.W., J.D. is the legal counsel for the NPDA. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degree in social work from the University of Illinois in Champaign and his law degree from DePaul University College of Law. He is very involved with training and counseling for several legal and social issues groups.
Pre-registration for the event is required. Sign up by visiting the registration link at www.privatedutyhomecare.org.
The NPDA is the first and only association in the country dedicated exclusively to private pay home care providers. The NPDA, a non-profit organization, currently represents more than 1,100 home care agencies in forty-four states and Puerto Rico.
The 17th annual Apple Festival is coming on September 10 on The Green in Montrose. Festivities will be happening from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will be something for everyone. This year, everyone will be wearing red to support literacy.
Featured will be U.S. Cycling Federation sanctioned 13 and 26 mile bike races through the Endless Mountains. The 13 mile course is rolling terrain with a good climb near the end of the loop. The long loop is designed for the experienced rider with some excellent Endless Mountain climbing.
For those who don’t ride, there will be food by the Dee-lish 706 food truck, a bake sale with tempting Southern Apple Crumb pie, games, balloons, and face painting for the children, a pie eating contest, and theme baskets including two gift certificates for children’s bikes. Vendors will be available selling items such as jewelry, homemade soaps, Tupperware, knitted items, and items for your pet.
This year, with the elimination of state funding, support of the Apple Festival is of the utmost importance. Please plan to spend some time at the festival and support the Susquehanna County Literacy Program whose mission is to provide life skills, education, and promote life long learning to residents of Susquehanna County. For more information, contact the literacy office at 465-2880 or sclp@epix.net.
(SPM Wire) It’s only been in existence in America since 1978, but National Grandparents Day has been increasing in popularity each year.
This year it will be celebrated on September 11 by families nationwide.
The holiday was founded by Marian McQuade, a housewife in West Virginia who was motivated by a desire to educate young people about the important historical contributions made by seniors. She also sought to come to the aid of lonely seniors in nursing homes.
In a fitting tribute, the official flower for Grandparents Day is the Forget-me-not!
Interestingly, the first Grandmother’s Day is said to have been celebrated in Poland in 1964.
Wayne/Susquehanna RESCUE’s annual meeting will feature a presentation by SEEDS, which stands for Sustainable Energy Education & Development Support, on Wednesday, September 21, 7:00 p.m., at the Forest City High School auditorium.
The SEEDS group, which was started three and a half years ago by a small group of people in Chairperson Michele Sand’s living room in Tyler Hill, PA, is dedicated to creating a more sustainable and resilient community by educating the public about, and creating an infrastructure for, renewable energy. The group has held numerous public forums about efficiency and renewable energy, and has arranged training in solar electric, solar thermal, and small-scale wind installations for local contractors.
Katharine Dodge, assistant Chair of SEEDS, will be the presenter. She lives on a very old farm in Lake Ariel with some modern improvements such as solar electric and a geothermal heating and cooling system. She will outline exciting new programs that the group has launched this summer. The Energy Awareness Action Movement (TEAAM) is providing free home energy assessments to 100 area homes. “Kick the Watt - a SEEDS 350 Project” is a continuation of the group’s 350 KWH Saved project launched last year. It rewards families with prizes and incentives for saving electricity. Funding help for Kick the Watt comes from a DEP Environmental Education Grant through Green Field Energy Solutions, and from PPL Electric Utilities. Ms. Dodge will also talk about the group’s Green Building Bus Tour on October 1 which will visit homes, businesses, and a school in our region, using some of the latest “green technologies.”
For more information about SEEDS visit www.seedsgroup.net or call 570-224-0052. For more information about Wayne/Susquehanna RESCUE, visit www.rescue-nepa.org.
All are welcome to attend this free program.
