Math-A-Thon At MV Benefits St. Jude’s Seventh and eighth grade students at Mountain View Junior-Senior High School showed their charitable spirit by linking math practice with donations to St. Jude’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. Math teachers, Mr. Chris Robinson and Ms. Abby Barrett, provided a healthy grade level competition for students who volunteered to work on math booklets containing 200 problems, then collect donations based on what they completed. Last week, Mountain View students sent $1600.00 to aid in the research and treatments of catastrophic childhood diseases. This donation could provide two days of chemotherapy for one patient or almost four days of oxygen for one patient! Pictured above, seventh grade participants: front - Stephanie Ostir, Karlee Weida, Emmett Jodon, Leanna Allen, Hannah Phillips; back - Doug Martin, Kacie Williams, Courtney Bognatz, Zack Heller, Brandon Freely, Devin Ball, Ali Showalter, Mr. Robinson. Pictured above, eight grade participants: front - Ashley Marble, Anna Bowman, Courtney Kashetta, Emily Tracy, Joanna Schwarztrauber, Kyle Heide; back - Amanda Wright, Traci Kromko, Sabrina Fallon, Sydney Miller, Paige Spencer, Alison Virbitsky, Christian Tomaino, Ms. Barrett; absent - Lindsay Hanas. St Jude’s is supported primarily by public contributions. Their daily operating cost is nearly $1.4 million! It treats children without regard to race, religion, creed, or ability to pay. It helps families cover all costs not covered by insurance. St. Jude’s has estimated that approximately 24 children are diagnosed with cancer in the U.S. each day. Cancer is also the leading disease killer of American children, with the hospital being the leading center for the study of these diseases. Mt. View is extremely proud of the participating students who have shown their commitment to helping a great cause. All of the students will receive certificates, a tee shirt and a pass to Six Flags, with others also receiving a sports bag or additional prize depending on the amount raised. A big thanks to the efforts of these students!
