Senior ID Theft Seminar

TUNKHANNOCK - Reps. Karen Boback (R-Columbia/Luzerne/Wyoming) and Sandra Major (R-Susquehanna/Wyoming/Wayne) have collaborated to bring the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Senior Crime Prevention University Seminar to the Wyoming County Senior Center, located at 101 Dymond Terrace in Tunkhannock, on Friday, July 22, at 12:30 p.m.

“Identity theft is one of the fastest growing crimes in the United States, and although anyone can be a victim, senior citizens are often the targets of identity theft schemes,” said Major. “We want to equip senior citizens with the knowledge and skills to recognize and avoid scams.”

Joyce O’Brien from the attorney general’s office will present information to senior citizens along the program’s theme of “Aware, Avoid, Alert.” Along with teaching how to spot scams, O’Brien will encourage victims to report suspicious activity to the police.

“It is heartbreaking that anyone would prey on the trust of senior citizens, but it is happening with greater frequency,” said Boback. “If senior citizens know what to look for, they will be less likely to become victims.”

Advanced registration is not required for the free event, which will include refreshments.

More information is available by contacting Boback’s office at (570) 836-4777 or Major’s office at (570) 278-3374.

Brooklyn Historical Society To Meet

The annual meeting of the Brooklyn Historical Society will be held at the Brooklyn Township Building on Sunday, July 31, at 2:00 p.m. This year the legacy of two Brooklyn sisters will be honored - Alice Louise Lee and Evalyn J. Lee.

Alice Louise Lee graduated from the Brooklyn High School in 1887 and became a nationally recognized writer of magazine articles and published her first novel one hundred years ago in 1911. Eight others followed. Four of her books became part of the Western genre begun by Zane Grey.

Her sister, Evalyn, was talented as a painter and photographer. Many families in Susquehanna County cherish her paintings.

Following the meeting, everyone is invited to an ice cream social, refreshments and music provided by various local groups. Books, pamphlets and maps will be available. A special invitation goes out to young and new families in the Brooklyn Township area to join in to discover the rich heritage handed down to us all.
