Three members of the Mountain View School District's Board of Education were recognized for their years of service at the PSBA Regional Legislative Meeting held on March 3 at the Mountain View School District. Pictured (l-r) above: Representative Sandra J. Major, James W. Zick and Representative Tina Pickett. James W. Zick, president of the Mountain View School District Board of Education, received recognition for twenty-eight (28) years of service. He was presented a plaque adding him to the PSBA "Honor Roll of School Board Service." Mr. Zick was initially appointed to the Board by the Susquehanna County Court to fill a vacancy with the appointment effective August 8, 1983. He has served on the Board continuously since that time. Kevin "Gus" M. Griffiths, a member of the Mountain View School District school board, received recognition for twelve (12) years of service. He was presented a certificate adding him to the PSBA "Honor Roll of School Board Service." Mr. Griffiths was appointed to the Board to fill a vacancy on October 18, 1999 and has served on the Board since that time. Sondra E. Stine, a member of the Mountain View School District school board, received recognition for twelve (12) years of service. She was presented a certificate adding her to the PSBA "Honor Roll of School Board Service." Mrs. Stine was seated as a member of the Board at the reorganization meeting held on December 6, 1999. Alan Hall, member of the Blue Ridge School District Board and Regional PSBA Director, along with PSBA staff member Karen Devine, presented the plaque and the certificates to the members of the Board of Education on behalf of PSBA. Pennsylvania State Representative Sandra J. Major, 111th District, presented a certificate to Mr. Zick on behalf of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives for his long term service as a member of the Board of Education. Pennsylvania State Representative, Tina Pickett, 110th District, joined in with Representative Major in the presentation and to extend their congratulations to the recipients for their dedicated service to education. Andrew Chichura, Mountain View Superintendent, extends his appreciation to each of these members of the Board of Education for their commitment to the education of the students and for their dedicated service. Boards of Education serve a vital function to ensure that school districts are operated in an effective and efficient manner. These individuals, along with those of their fellow board members, reflect their dedication to giving our children the opportunity to gain knowledge through the best educational system possible.
EL Forensics Team Washington Bound After a record breaking season, the Elk Lake Forensics Team’s one goal was to qualify debaters to the National Catholic Forensics League Tournament in Washington DC over Memorial Day weekend. At the Scranton Catholic Forensics League’s National Qualifying Tournament on March 5 at Dallas Middle School, the EL Forensics Team came one debate short of qualifying all three debaters in Lincoln-Douglas Debate to NCFL Nationals. Pictured above, EL Forensics Team qualifiers to the NCFL National Tournament: EL Forensics Director Keith Brosious; Austin Cohen, 4th place in LD Debate; Richard Guiton, 1st place in LD Debate; EL Assistant Coach Dr. Kurt Liebegott. Junior Richard Guiton and sophomore Austin Cohen qualified to Nationals and senior Shea Skinner came up one debate short of making it back to NCFL Nationals for the 4th consecutive season. Guiton received an automatic qualification after compiling an undefeated 4 win and 0 loss record during the preliminary rounds by defeating debaters from Abington Heights, Meyers, Danville, and Dallas High Schools. Cohen’s road was a little bit tougher. He compiled a 3 win and 1 loss record during the preliminary rounds by defeating debaters from Meyers and Danville High Schools. Cohen’s lone loss, to Danville’s Dmitro Martynowich, meant that he had to debate in a run-off round against Krystal Oschal from Dallas High School in order to qualify to Nationals. Cohen won that run-off debate. Skinner had compiled a 3 win and 1 loss record during the preliminary rounds by defeating 3 debaters from Meyers High School. His only loss came to Ashita Mittal from Danville, who ended the day with an undefeated record. Skinner lost a close run-off debate to Martynowich from Danville and did not earn a slot to the NCFL National Tournament. “This was a tremendous performance today. We were almost 3 for 3 in debate. The boys put a lot of work in over the past few weeks and it really paid off today,” commented EL Forensics Director Keith Brosious. The two national qualifiers will head to Washington DC over Memorial Day weekend to compete against the top 200 debaters in the country for the national championship. Brosious added that the accomplishments of Cohen and Guiton are particularly outstanding because Cohen is only a sophomore and Guiton, as a junior, is only in his second year of debate competition. Skinner’s loss is particularly tough, Brosious continued, because this would’ve been his fourth consecutive trip to NCFL Nationals. Only one other EL Forensics Team member has ever accomplished this. The team will travel to LaSalle College High School to wrap up its qualifying season at the Valley Forge District of the National Forensics League’s National Qualifying Tournament. The tournament, which brings together the top debaters from the eastern half of Pennsylvania, will qualify the top two competitors in each event to the NFL National Tournament during the third week in June in Dallas, TX.
