Kindness Project At Blue Ridge

The Blue Ridge 8th grade class has been working on a kindness project. Mrs. Gilboy set out to teach the students a life lesson on what makes everyday people extraordinary. What can you do to help another human being, animal, or a community? What is giving all about? Students studied Gandhi and Martin Luther King in reading class and read about the hard times they both faced in life and what was more important to them - to make a difference in the world.

Students put “kindness jars” around the school for a month and when finished they had collected $60. The sixth grade was especially generous to the cause. The money was donated to ProjectMedishare. This organization has been to Haiti to perform surgery on babies who need care. Retired Blue Ridge school teacher Nancy Bellucci’s daughter, Sara, is a pediatric operating room nurse and has been to Haiti before. On the last trip, the nurses had to wrap babies in plastic bags to keep them warm after surgery. This is just what the 8th graders were looking for, and gladly donated the money to this fine cause. The money will buy blankets for children to keep them warm. This is one lesson that will surely stick with the students and one lesson this very proud teacher will never forget.
