The Elk Lake Forensics Team picked up where it left off when it came into the most competitive Pittsburgh area tournament, the Bethel Park Blackhawk Invitational on February 11-12, and came out with two more trophies and another finalist in Lincoln-Douglas Debate. Pictured above, EL Forensics Team place-winners at the Bethel Park High School Blackhawk Invitational Tournament: Richard Guiton, 2nd place in LD Debate; Shea Skinner, 13th in LD Debate. The tournament, which brought together the top forensics teams from West Virginia, western PA, and eastern Ohio, was the EL Forensics Team’s final tournament before Districts. Junior Richard Guiton, who placed in the top 16 in Philadelphia, came out of the preliminary round in Lincoln-Douglas Debate as the top seeded debater with a 5 win and 0 loss record, which he earned by defeating debaters from Danville, North Allegheny, State College, and Pittsburgh Central Catholic High Schools. In his Octa-Final Round, Guiton defeated Quinglan Huang from Upper Saint Clair High School on a unanimous decision and advanced to Quarter-Finals. In Quarter-Finals, Guiton defeated Christopher Combernale from North Allegheny High School once again on a unanimous decision and advanced to Semi-Finals. Guiton faced North Allegheny’s Richard Gaylor, the top debater in the Pittsburgh area this year, in Semi-Finals. Guiton, for the third consecutive round, won on a unanimous decision and advanced to Finals. The final round was a repeat, right down to the sides chosen by the debaters, of the Meyers Tournament and the Scranton CFL January Tournament as Guiton faced off against Dmitro Martynovich from Danville High School. The two had split the previous two encounters. This time, on a split decision, Guiton lost the round and placed 2nd in LD Debate. Senior Shea Skinner advanced to the Octa-Final Round after defeating debaters from Danville and North Allegheny High Schools en route to a 3 win and 2 loss record and a 10th seed in the tournament. In Octa-Finals, Skinner lost a unanimous decision to Sally Stewart from North Canton (OH) Glenoak High School and placed 13th in the tournament. “This was an incredible weekend for Ricky (Guiton). This week was his week. He had the best tournament of his season,” commented EL Forensics Director Keith Brosious. The team will take its first weekend off since coming back after Christmas break. Then, they will travel to Abington Heights High School to compete at the PA High School Speech League District 8 Speech and Debate Championship on February 26.
