Bringing Home Trophies And Breaking Records

Not only did the Elk Lake Forensics Team bring home several individual awards at the 2011 Pennsbury Falcon Invitational at Pennsbury High School in Fairless Hills, PA on February 4-5, but they also shattered 3 team records.

Leading the EL Forensics Team in Lincoln-Douglas Debate at the PFI, which included 100 debaters from Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Virginia and Washington DC, was sophomore Austin Cohen who compiled a 5 win and 1 loss record during the preliminary rounds.

Pictured above, Elk Lake place-winners at Pennsbury Falcon Invitational Tournament: Richard Guiton, 11th place in LD Debate; Austin Cohen, 1st place in LD Debate; Shea Skinner, 8th place in LD Debate.

Cohen advanced automatically through the Double-Octa round. Cohen then proceeded to win his Octa-Final, Quarter-Final, and Semi-Final rounds enroute to a Final Round appearance.

In finals, Cohen met up with Ashita Mittal from Danville High School. Cohen won a 2-1 decision and the LD Debate Championship.

Senior Shea Skinner also advanced out of the preliminary rounds by compiling a 5 win and 1 loss record. Skinner also advanced automatically through the Double-Octa round. He then won his Octa-Final round.

Skinner’s win streak was finally stopped in Quarter-Finals where he lost a unanimous decision to Ashita Mittal from Danville High School and placed 8th overall in the tournament.

Junior Richard Guiton compiled a 4 win and 2 loss record during the preliminary rounds. That earned him a spot in the Double-Octa round. Unlike his teammates, however, Guiton had to debate his way through the Octa-Final round. Guiton did so and advanced to the Octa-Final round where he lost to a debater from Newburgh Free Academy in NY. He ended up finishing 11th in the tournament.

The impressive performance by the 3 debaters also led the team to a 4th place finish overall in the Debate Sweepstakes competition.

The 22-6 record compiled by the team shattered the previous single tournament win record, 18 wins, for the team. That record had been set at a tournament in 2002 with 6, not 3, debaters.

In addition to winning the LD title, Cohen also shattered the EL Forensics Team record for most wins in a tournament with 10 wins. The previous record was shared by Molly Copeland and Eric Allen who set the record in 2007 and 2002, respectively.

Cohen also shattered the EL Forensics Team record for most National Forensics League points in a single tournament with 63 points. Early in the season, Cohen and teammate Skinner had re-set this record at 45 points.

“Words simply cannot express how impressive this performance was. These boys were competitive in a huge field at a grueling tournament. In one tournament, they took down three impressive team records,” commented an awestruck EL Forensics Director Keith Brosious.

Penelope Penguin Visits Angel Beginnings

The brisk winter weather was perfect for Penelope Penguin to visit the 4-year-olds at Angel Beginnings Christian Learning Center at the United Methodist Church in Montrose. Filled with enthusiasm, Penelope actively engaged the very excited groups of children from both the morning and the afternoon sessions. She sang with them and taught them a song about penguins and then shared books about penguins she had gotten from the library. While the children shared what they knew about penguins, Penelope used the PA One book for 2009, “If You Were a Penguin” by Wendell and Florence Minor, to highlight some of their facts. The children enthusiastically provided the sound effects for some of the parts as she read the book to them. They then took turns helping her put together a very large Velcro penguin puzzle.

Even though the students were sure Penelope wasn’t a real penguin, they played along with the character (retired teacher from Mountain View, Cindy G. Reynolds) and her antics. The highlight of Penelope’s visit was when she gave each of the children their own penguin finger puppet. The teachers as well as the children thoroughly enjoyed the visit. Some of them even thought Penelope must know Sebastien the Scarecrow, another book character who had visited the class just before Thanksgiving and read a story and sang with the students.

Penelope also visited the consumers of Community Options that meet at the UM Church. They also enjoyed their interactions with Penelope.
