Study To Analyze Marcellus Effects An online survey studying the relationship between income and well-being for individuals who own property in the Northeastern Pennsylvania region of Marcellus Shale natural gas drilling is now open to the public. The survey is being conducted under the Institute’s Visiting Scholar Program in conjunction with a faculty member at Keystone College, Patty Fox, Psy.D. Dr. Fox is working with the Institute for Public Policy & Economic Development to conduct the survey and analyze the results. The purpose of the study is to evaluate the relationship between income and subjective well-being of landowners in the Marcellus Shale gas drilling counties of Lackawanna, Susquehanna, Wayne and Wyoming who have been approached to sign a lease for natural gas drilling. Participants need not have signed. Individuals are invited to participate in this survey if they: are age 18 or older; own land in Lackawanna, Susquehanna, Wayne or Wyoming counties in Pennsylvania; have signed a lease for natural gas drilling in the Marcellus Shale; have been asked to sign a lease for natural gas drilling but have not signed. Participants will be asked to complete the survey in February and take the survey again in June and a final time in October. Participation in this survey is entirely confidential. Participants may withdraw from the study at any time. “We are interested in learning if people’s well-being changes over time, especially if people receive money related to natural gas drilling activities,” said Dr. Fox. “Your participation may help researchers and others involved in public policy to better understand the impact of income on well-being.” The survey can be accessed at: http://www.institutepa.org/. It consists of 14 demographic questions and a short three-part survey on well-being. The survey takes approximately 20 minutes to complete. It is available online through March 10. A summary of the results will be published in December 2011 after all data from the survey have been assessed and analyzed by Dr. Fox and The Institute. The Institute for Public Policy & Economic Development is a partnership among Keystone College, King’s College, Luzerne County Community College, Marywood University, Misericordia University, Penn State Wilkes-Barre, University of Scranton, and Wilkes University. The Institute provides essential research, analysis and consultation services to small and mid-size cities, counties, non-profit organizations, and businesses aiming for full participation in the 21st century economy. The Institute mobilizes the resources of regional institutions of higher education to engage communities in strategic planning endeavors rooted in informed qualitative and quantitative analysis. For questions about the research itself, or if you would like to participate in the study but are unable to access it online, contact Shelly Harlander at harlander@institutepa.org.
