New Wins In New Jersey

It was a new week, in a new state, against new competition. However, for the Elk Lake Forensics Team, the results were the same - more wins.

At the 2011 Ridge Invitational at Ridge High School in Basking Ridge, NJ on January 29, the EL Forensics Team placed two more debaters in the top 6 of Varsity Lincoln-Douglas Debate of a major tournament.

EL place-winners at the 2011 Ridge Invitational: Austin Cohen, 5th place in Varsity LD Debate; Shea Skinner, 4th place in Varsity LD Debate.

This week, the team was led by senior Shea Skinner who placed 4th by compiling a 3 win and 1 loss record during the preliminary rounds in Varsity LD Debate by defeating debaters from Randolph, Milburn, and Timothy Christian High Schools. His only loss came to Deep Dheri, the runner up in the tournament, from Montville High School.

Sophomore Austin Cohen also compiled a 3 win and 1 loss record and placed 5th. Cohen’s wins came over debaters from Mountain Lakes High School as well as a bye. His only loss came from the eventual tournament champion Neville Dusaj from Montville High School.

“This was another strong performance for the team at a tournament outside of our region. At this point in the year, it is a plus to compete against different competitors with different styles,” commented EL Forensics Director Keith Brosious.

Amelia Bedelia Visits Lackawanna Trail

Although the weather was frigid outside, Amelia Bedelia warmed the second graders at Lackawanna Trail Elementary Center with laughter. As a culmination of their study of idioms and author Peggy Parish, the students were treated to a visit from Amelia Bedelia herself. Dressed as the character complete with her black dress, white apron and hat with flowers, Cindy Reynolds, retired elementary teacher from Mountain View, not only entertained but shared reading as a fun activity.

Book character Amelia Bedelia entertained the second graders at Lackawanna Trail with her literal interpretations of idioms. Here she shows off her “dressed chicken” as the children joyfully looked on.

She began by telling them that she had received a phone call that morning from their principal, Mr. Gregory, asking her to substitute for the day. She then read the book “Teach Us, Amelia Bedelia” while she engaged the second graders with her antics beginning with the first thing on the list, call the roll. They laughed, they cheered, and they tried to clear her confusion.

Using the series of books as her guide and taking the idioms literally, the maid Amelia Bedelia continued by working through the list of chores she had been given by her boss, Mrs. Rogers. Engaging the group of children, she had them removing spots from a sundress with scissors, putting bulbs in pots, changing the sheets and towels, separating the eggs, and running the iron over the tablecloth. Their cheers of “encore” as she finished was witness to how much they enjoyed her visit.

Amelia Bedelia is a book character who takes language literally. There are many, may books in a series about her antics. It is a wonderful avenue for teaching young children about language in a fun and entertaining way.

Following her presentation, she then visited Mrs. Meaghan Jones’ classroom to show some of “The Best Dressed Chickens,” which is based on the original book.
