Penelope Penguin At Mountain View
Submitted By Cindy G. Reynolds

The extremely cold weather was the perfect setting for Penelope Penguin’s visit with the kindergarten class at Mountain View late in January. Even though the students were sure Penelope wasn’t a real penguin, they played along with the character (retired teacher, Miss Reynolds) and thoroughly enjoyed the visit. Filled with enthusiasm, Penelope actively engaged close to 100 very excited five and six year olds. They sang “I’m a Little Penguin” several times and acted out motions for the song. They helped put together a foam puzzle of a penguin and talked about a tuxedo, duet, pals and a toboggan which were in the story. The students had a chance to tell Penelope some things they already knew about penguins as well.

Penelope Penguin engages kindergarten students at Mountain View in lots of penguin activities.

Using the big book format, Penelope then introduced and read the PA One book for 2009, “If You Were a Penguin” by Wendell and Florence Minor. A highlight of her visit was when each of the students received a penguin finger puppet and pictures of penguins to color. In exchange, the students had all signed a penguin card as a thank you for Penelope and gave her a large stuffed penguin which she immediately named Petunia.

The Pre-K Counts class also received a visit from Penelope (and Petunia) the same afternoon. The 20 four year olds loved the activities she engaged them in. In addition to the finger puppets, the Pre-K Counts class also received a treat of homemade penguin-shaped sugar cookies for their afternoon snack.

Penelope has also been sited at Treasure House in Montrose, the kindergarten class in Blue Ridge, the library in Taylor, and Timmy’s Town at the Steamtown Mall. It is rumored that in April, Penelope will visit some preschool sites as The Mole, the main character in the 2010 PA One Book, “What a Treasure?” by Jane and Will Hillenbrand. Making book characters come to life for the students is the goal of these visits and anyone who has ever seen any of Miss Reynolds’ characters certainly knows that she achieves her goal for the adults as well as the children.
