WILLIAM CHARLES SOWDEN

William Charles “Bill” Sowden, 61, Susquehanna, PA went to be with the Lord, January 7, 2008 at home after an illness. He is survived by his wife, Marieta Schwartz Sowden. They celebrated their twentieth wedding anniversary in October, 2007.

Also surviving are his four children, Holly and Jeff Zembek, Binghamton, NY, Michael Sowden, New Milford, PA, Stacey and Donald Schwartz, Windsor, NY, and David and Eve Schwartz, Susquehanna, PA; three grandchildren, Avery, Lain, and Michael Zembek; a sister, Sandra and Skip Lindemuth; one brother, Burton and Marion Reese; several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was predeceased by his stepmother, Anne Reese Sowden; a sister, Patricia L. Sowden Mott; and a brother-in-law, James Mott.

Born in Taylor, PA, Bill was the son of the late William R. and Helen Elizabeth Oister Sowden. He graduated in 1964 from Riverside High School. In 1968 he graduated from East Stroudsburg University, majoring in Physical Education. He was a member of the soccer and wrestling teams and was inducted into the ESU Hall of Fame as a member of the 1964-1965 soccer team.

Bill taught and coached at Abington High School in Denton, Maryland. When he returned to Pennsylvania, he continued his teaching and soccer coaching career at Blue Ridge School District. He worked for several years at BAE Aeronautic Systems, as a project manager, in Johnson City, NY. Upon retiring, he returned to substitute teaching in the Blue Ridge School District.

Bill was a member of the Mt. Hermon Masonic Lodge in Union Dale, PA. After retirement he funded and ran Running Water Outfitters canoe and kayak rental at his home in Susquehanna. He was also an avid woodworker. Bill was an inspiration and mentor to children of all ages.

A Masonic Lodge Ceremony was held, followed by a memorial service on Friday, January 11 at the Tuttle-Yeisley Funeral Home, Hallstead.

HENRY C. ROBBS

Henry C. Robbs, 71, Hallstead, PA, passed away Tuesday, January 8, 2008 at the Forest City Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He is survived by his wife, Darlene Confer Robbs. They have been together for thirty-four years.

Henry is also survived by his mother, Vera Boyer; his children, Thomas Robbs, Lee Robbs, Mike Robbs, Lorraine Hall, Greg Isby, Shawn Isby; five grandchildren; one brother, Jim Robbs; three sisters, Juanita O’Dell, Sandy Robbs, Linda Temple; several nieces and nephews.

At Henry’s request there will be no services.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Tuttle-Yeisley Funeral Home, Hallstead.

CHARLOTTE NILSSON

Charlotte Nilsson, 69, formerly of Susquehanna and more currently a resident of Hunlock Creek, PA, passed away on Thursday, January 10, 2008 at the home of her daughter in Susquehanna.

She was under the care of Hospice and surrounded by her loving family at the time of her death.

She was born the daughter of Florence and Charles Furman in 1938 in Queens, New York. In 1954, she married her beloved husband, William “Buddy” Nilsson, who predeceased her in 1994 after 40 years of marriage. Together they had five children: Debra Nilsson, Naknek, AK, Bill Nilsson, Middlebury, VT, Bradley Nilsson, Dallas, PA, Kimberly Nilsson Potter, Susquehanna, and Brett Nilsson, who preceded them both in death in 1974. She is also survived by eight devoted grandchildren; a sister, Audrey Waldron, Missouri; numerous nieces and nephews, and many other extended family members and close friends.

She was employed for some time as a medical receptionist for Doctors Shaw, Saran and Purkay as well as working as a switchboard operator at Barnes-Kasson Hospital. She enjoyed scrapbooking, card making, family camping, gardening and canning. She was a past member of Eastern Star for approximately 40 years.

A memorial service was held on January 11, conducted by Pastor Gary Haskell at the Jackson Baptist Church in Jackson.

She will be greatly missed and long remembered by all those she touched.

THELMA M. BURNS

Thelma M. Burns, 70, Susquehanna, PA, on Wednesday, January 9, 2008 at the Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, PA. She was the daughter of the late LeRoy and Addie (Comfort) Halstead.

Thelma was predeceased by her husband, Charles Burns; two sisters, Betty M. Halstead, Viola Halstead; one brother, Henry Halstead; and sister-in-law, Elizabeth (Betty) Burns.

She was survived by her son, Michael Papusha, Sr. and companion, Jeanne Knapp, Thompson, PA; brother, Howard and Karen Halstead, South Fallsburg, NY; sister, Virginia and Joseph Shay, Susquehanna; three grandchildren, Michael Papusha, Jr., Great Bend, PA, David Papusha, Lyons, NY, Beth Papusha, Brooklyn, NY; brother-in-law, Howard (Mugsy) Burns, Jr., Susquehanna; several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, step-great-grandchildren, and friends.

A funeral service was held at Hennessey’s Funeral Home, Susquehanna, on Monday, January 14 with Pastor Fred Johnson officiating.
