Elk Lake Stellar At CFL Tournament

In its first Scranton Catholic Forensics League Tournament of the season, the Elk Lake Forensics Team, despite their inexperience, brought home two trophies.

Pictured (l-r) are Elk Lake Forensics Team Place-Winners at the Scranton CFL Tournament on December 15: Austin Cohen – First Place in JV LD Debate, Max McKeon – Second Place in Varsity Student Congress.

Seventh grader Austin Cohen continued his success by capturing the championship in JV Lincoln-Douglas Debate while his teammate, senior Max McKeon placed second in Varsity Student Congress at the Scranton CFL Tournament held at Pocono Mountain West High School on December 15.

Cohen compiled an undefeated, four win and no loss record in the preliminary rounds of JV LD Debate, in a field of all freshmen and sophomores, by defeating two debaters from Shikellamy High School and two from Danville and Wallenpaupack High Schools.

As a result of his record, he advanced to Finals where he was matched up against Katherine Kemberline, whom he had beaten in Round 1, from Shikellamy High School. Cohen won a split decision in Finals and completed his undefeated performance by capturing the championship in JV LD Debate.

Senior Max McKeon placed second in the largest event, over 20 competitors, in the tournament.

Freshman Shea Skinner compiled a two win and two loss record in Varsity LD Debate and placed sixth overall.

“This is a strong start for the team in the local league,” commented EL Forensics Director Keith Brosious.

The team will travel to Shikellamy High School in Sunbury, PA on January 12 to compete at the 36th annual Blue, Maroon, and White Tournament.
