Free Talk On The Starrucca Viaduct

If you have ever driven through Lanesboro, PA (near Susquehanna), you have certainly noticed the huge stone arched bridge which is one of Susquehanna County's landmarks. It's the Starrucca Viaduct, constructed in 1848 of local bluestone. Considered to be the most expensive railroad bridge in the world when it was built, it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a Historic Civil Engineering Landmark.

This photo of the Starrucca Viaduct was taken in 1920.

But this remarkable railroad bridge is not only an imposing physical presence; it has also been featured in art and in history. Everyone is invited to a fascinating talk, "The Starrucca Viaduct: More than a Local Landmark," by historian William S. Young. Bill's talk will be the highlight of the Susquehanna County Historical Society & Free Library's annual meeting. Since the SCHS&FLA is celebrating 100 years of service to Susquehanna County this year, it will also be a great opportunity to hear about the many exciting activities of the Library and Historical Society, and to kick off a year of celebrations of the SCHS&FLA's birthday.

The annual meeting will be held on Saturday, January 27, starting at 2 p.m., at St. Paul's Episcopal Church Hall in Montrose, PA. Admission is free and refreshments will be served. For more information about the Library and Historical Society, visit www.susqcolibrary.org or call (570) 278-1881.

Clifford Twp. Historical Society Annual Meeting

The Clifford Township Historical Society will hold its first annual organizational meeting on Sunday, January 21 at 1:30 p.m. in the Clifford Twp. Volunteer Firemen's Hall. Officers and directors will be installed for their terms of office. The thirty-minute video, "Our Barns," produced by the historical society and On Site Video Production Services, to celebrate the bicentennial, will be shown. In this video, John Watkins, Alison Armstrong and Zeke Boyle explain some of the architectural highlights and building methods used in the construction of the early barns in the township.

An overview of possible activities for 2007 will be presented, including a cemetery theater. The historical society's involvement in the bicentennial celebration was its first community endeavor. The society members hope many folks from the area will attend this annual meeting to add their ideas and comments for the future of this new organization. Refreshments will be served.

Questions, call Kim Bostjancic 222-4261 or Sandy Wilmot 679-2723.

The Gospel In Jazz At Brooklyn Church

On Sunday, January 21, at 2:30 p.m., Ed Simmons will present “The Gospel In Jazz” at the First Universalist Church, Brooklyn. Born into a family of faith and music, Ed crawled up on the piano bench at the age of four and began to pound out some tunes. At the age of seven, Ed began piano lessons, but quit after one year. later, he was inspired to resume piano lessons and attributes much of his style to his teacher of many years, Mr. George Russell. Although people told Ed he had God-given talents, he never used his gifts and graces in the ministry of the church until 1975 when The Rev. Bill Jones, having heard him play, invited him to play at an evening service in Hawleyton. Although Ed retired from pastoral ministry in 2005, he now shares the gifts and graces of music to celebrate God’s love from creation to recreation.

The public is invited to join for this inspiring afternoon in singing your favorite hymns.
