Wednesday, February 23: Italian marinated chicken, long grain brown rice, Brussels sprouts, wheat bread, peaches.

Free Tax Assistance For Area Taxpayers

AARP’s Tax-Aide Program will be providing free tax assistance to low- or moderate-income taxpayers, with special attention to those age 60 and older in the Susquehanna County area. Tax-Aide volunteers are trained in cooperation with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

Tax-Aide volunteers will be at the following locations on the days indicated from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. Appointments may be made at the sites, or by calling the number listed.

Monday - Wednesday, February 7 - 9: Susquehanna County Office Building, Montrose, 1-800-634-3746.

Lincoln Day Dinner

Susquehanna County Republican Chairman Donna Cosmello has announced the annual Lincoln Day dinner will be held on Saturday, February 19, 1 to 4 p.m. at the Mountain View School, Kingsley. The traditional roast beef dinner will be served.

This year’s guest speaker will be former Lt. Governor William Scranton. The event will also give people a chance to “Meet The Candidates”. The Lincoln Day dinner will be the 2005 election kick-off with local elections being held for Prothonotary, Sheriff and the Montrose Area District Magistrate.

Library Book Contest Runs Through Feb.

All Susquehanna County students in grades K-12 are invited to enter the Susquehanna County Historical Society & Free Library Association's Eleventh "Write and Illustrate Your Own Picture Book Contest." The final deadline is Saturday, February 26, so now is the time to get started if you haven't already! An entry form must be submitted with each manuscript. Rules and forms are available at the libraries, or on-line at www.susqcolibrary.org/wiobc.htm.

The contest is one of the most popular library programs. First place entries from previous years can be checked out at the county libraries, and are a wonderful addition to the libraries' collections.

The winners of this year's contest will be announced on March 23. All contestants will receive a Certificate of Recognition and personal comments on their books.

Toddler Time At Montrose Library

On the second Thursday of every month, at 9:30 a.m., children ages 2 to 3 1/2 and their parents are invited to the Children's Room of the Main Library in Montrose for songs, stories, and rhymes. No registration is required and there's no fee – just come and enjoy some time with your little one! The next sessions of Toddler Time will be February 10, March 10, April 14, May 12, and June 9.

Exposing your child to the joys of words and stories as early as possible is one of the best things you can do for him or her, and the library is the ideal place to do it. The Susquehanna County Libraries (Montrose, Forest City, Hallstead-Great Bend, and Susquehanna) are open evenings and Saturdays, and library cards are free. From Babies and Books for infants, to Teen Summer Reading, there's something for your children at the library.

Book Contest Deadline

Madigan To Hold Local Outreaches

Harrisburg – State Sen. Roger A. Madigan (R-23) will host outreach events in February, to give Susquehanna County residents a chance to ask questions or discuss issues concerning state government.

“Constituents are invited to stop by and discuss any problems or questions they might have about state issues or state programs,” Madigan said.

The senator said on Friday, February 18, a staff member will be available to speak with constituents from 11 a.m. until 12 p.m. at the Susquehanna County Offices Annex, 31 Public Avenue, Montrose.

They are then available to meet with constituents from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Great Bend/Hallstead Public Library, 201 Franklin Street, Hallstead.

No appointment is necessary.

The senator added that constituents who are unable to attend but would like to speak with him or a staff member should feel free to call either of his district offices, located at One Progress Plaza, Suite 13, Towanda, telephone (570) 265–7448, and 330 Pine St., Suite 200, Williamsport, telephone (570) 322–6457, or 1–800–443–5772.

Dairy Day At Elk Lake School

Join for the 16th Annual Susquehanna County Dairy Day to be held on Friday, March 4 at the Elk Lake High School, sponsored by Penn State Cooperative Extension. The event will begin at 9:00 a.m. and conclude around 3:30 p.m. The day will be filled with educational presentations, free health screenings, commercial exhibitors, door prizes, free lunch, free dairy bar (milk, cheese and ice cream) and a pie baking contest and auction.

The Miner family, Connie, Amanda and Andy join current Dairy Princess Amanda Zembrzycki serving free ice cream at last year’s Dairy Day.

Let’s not forget the free roast beef, baked fish and macaroni and cheese dinner compliments of the Dairy Day exhibitors. Dinner reservations are required, call the Extension Office at 278-1158. Dinner reservation deadline is 12:00 noon, Thursday, March 3. Individuals making dinner reservations will pick up meal tickets at the registration table upon arrival at the school.

Secretary of Agriculture, Dennis Wolff will be on hand and will speak at the event at 2:00 in the gymnasium just before the pie auction.

Educational workshops will be held in classrooms. Those attending the workshops will have the opportunity to win door prizes. Workshop pre-registration not necessary.

Health education and free health screenings will be offered from 9:00 till 3:00.

Can you bake a pie? A pie baking contest and pie auction will once again be held at Susquehanna County Dairy Day. Folks are invited to exercise their pie baking skills by participating in this contest. All pies will be auctioned off at 2:00 p.m. in the gym with all proceeds benefiting the 4-H Dairy Program and the Dairy Princess/Promotion Program in Susquehanna County. Pre-registration is required, call the Extension Office (278-1158). Anyone is eligible to enter the contest.

Many door prizes will be offered to dairy farmers, dairy farmers wives and dairy farm employees 18 years and older attending Dairy Day. Enter the drawing at the registration table when you arrive at the school. There will also be a door prize given away at the end of the day for non-farm folks attending dairy day.

Historical Society Sets Schedule

The Susquehanna Depot Area Historical Society will be holding their first meeting of 2005 in the borough building in Susquehanna at 7 p.m. on Thursday, February 17.

The museum is closed temporarily, but the contents are in a secure location until a suitable home can be found.

The society was founded about twenty years ago by Mrs. Jeanette Brownell. New members are always welcome.

Kid Safe Night At Blue Ridge

The Honorable Kenneth W. Seamans, Susquehanna County President Judge, the Susquehanna County District Attorney’s Office, Susquehanna County Juvenile Probation, and Blue Ridge School District will present “Kid Safe Night” on Thursday, March 3, 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Blue Ridge High School.

County agencies, law enforcement, and other governing bodies will be on hand to present information on the following topics: Internet Safety, Drugs and Underage Drinking, Child Predator Information, Teen Driving Safety, Abduction Prevention and Child Identification, Tobacco Laws, Bullying, Piercing and Tattoo Laws, Child Abuse, Gun Safety and Weapons Laws, Conflict Resolution Strategies for Children and Teens, Child and Teen Sex Offenses, Talking to Your Child About Sex, Information on HIV/Aids and STDs, Fire and Emergency Information, Teen Gambling, and more.

Free refreshments for all and baby-sitting will be available for children ages 3 and up. This event is open to all county residents, especially parents! A special presentation will be given in the auditorium from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on the current trends in drug use, distribution, and possession.

Story Hour At Susky Library

Preschool story hour sessions will be held on Tuesday afternoons at the Susquehanna Branch Library, beginning March 1 through April 5, at 2 p.m. Children, ages 3 1/2 to 5 will share stories, crafts and special visits. Registration deadline is February 25.
