Jaime Benson S U Remembrance Scholar

Jaime Benson of Susquehanna, PA, a senior majoring in psychology and sociology in the College of Arts and Sciences at Syracuse University, was among the 35 University students honored at the Remembrance Scholars convocation held Oct. 22 in Hendricks Chapel on the Syracuse University campus.

Jaime is a 2001 graduate of Susquehanna Community High School, daughter of John and Debbie Benson.

The Remembrance Scholarship, among the most prestigious scholarships awarded by the University, were founded as a tribute to, and a means of remembrance for, the 35 Syracuse University students who were killed in the Dec. 21, 1988 bombing while returning to the United States from a semester of study abroad.

Applicants for the $5,000 scholarship were asked to highlight their academic achievements and their University activities, including community service. They also wrote essays and participated in interviews with members of the selection committee.

"The United States has responded to terrorism with military activity. Just as important, however, is the work these 35 young scholars and activists will undertake," says David M. Rubin, dean of the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications and chair of the selection committee. "We are in a war that cannot be won militarily. It can only be won with ideas. And it is to young people like these 35 that we look for the ideas that will bring peace."
