Gibson Barracks To Conduct Academy Troop R, Gibson Barracks, Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) will be conducting a Citizens’ Police Academy in Susquehanna County from August 3 through September 7. The classes will give attendees an "inside look" at the resources the PSP utilizes to serve the citizens of the Commonwealth including, but not limited to: Recruiting, K-9, Special Emergency Response Team, Criminal Investigation, Fire Marshal, Forensic Services, Patrol and Aviation Units. Classes will be held on Tuesdays, from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. for six weeks. Interested applicants must be at least 18 years old and can obtain applications at PSP Gibson. The application deadline is July 20. Class size will be limited, so apply early.
4-H Roundup At The Harford Fair The Susquehanna 4-H Livestock Roundup will be held on Tuesday, August 17, during the 147th annual Harford Fair. The 4-H roundup is the judging of animals the 4-H members raised (breeding/market classes), and their ability to present the animals to the judge (master exhibitor, showmanship and fitting classes). Over 90 Susquehanna County 4-H members currently participate in the program. This year the judges are Michelle Cornman, Hummelstown and Chester Hughes, Lancaster. The day begins at 8 a.m. in the pig/sheep arena with the swine showmanship, fitting, and market classes. By far the largest show of the day, Susquehanna County 4-H’ers have tagged over 100 pigs to be exhibited. At 1 p.m., the action moves to the cattle arena with the beef master exhibitor, breeding, and market steer classes. By far the most committing project, the beef project has seen a resurgence in interest this year, with 21 steers tagged, plus breeding animals and baby beef. Immediately following the beef show in the cattle arena, is the market goat show. The newest addition to the livestock program, this show also consists of master exhibitor, breeding, and market classes. This year six market goats will be exhibited along with breeding animals. The day concludes with the market lamb show, in the pig/sheep arena, at 6 p.m. Over 20 market lambs will be shown along with breeding animals, showmanship and fitting classes. Livestock 4-H activities during the Harford Fair conclude with the annual livestock auction on Saturday, August 21 at noon in the cattle arena. Local businesses and individuals continue to support area youth by purchasing high quality hogs, lambs, steers and goats. Blueberry Festival Preparations Underway The 25th Annual Blueberry Festival, which will take place Friday, August 6 and Saturday, August 7 (9 a.m. - 4 p.m.) on the Village Green in Montrose, will feature dozens of events and activities. All proceeds from the event help operate the Susquehanna County Historical Society and Free Library Association, which serves the county with a museum, a main library and three branches, and Books-By-Mail and Books-On-Wheels. Mary Jo Bayer, Paula Catlin, and Ellen O'Malley are chairing the Festival this year. Don't bother holding that yard sale – the White Elephant Sale (Saturday only) will be glad to pass your treasures on. Stop by the Library for directions on where to take items. Items should be clean and in working condition. Please, no clothing or exercise equipment. At 9 a.m. sharp on Friday morning the book sale opens, with donated hardcovers, paperbacks, magazines, records, and videos on sale. Donations of good-quality used books are being accepted through Friday, July 30 – please bring them to the library by then. Most books are very reasonable, but old and valuable books do come up for sale and are priced accordingly. The wide selection draws book dealers as well as readers and booklovers of all ages and interests. New books, both children's and adults, will also be for sale. New additions to the wide range of Festival t-shirts, sweatshirts, and other items will include a totebag, hats, and a T-shirt commemorating the 25th anniversary. Another limited-edition print of a watercolor by Sarah Miller will be issued this year. Water bottles, candles, pewter keychains and more also make great souvenirs of Montrose and the Festival. Volunteers are always needed to help with the Blueberry Festival, and donations of handcrafts, items for the silent auction, and preserves are also eagerly sought. Partners In Arts Grant Applications The Bradford County Regional Arts Council (BCRAC) is pleased to announce the availability of grant funds through the Pennsylvania Partners in the Arts Program (PPA), to support arts and cultural activities occurring between September 1, 2004 – August 31, 2005. Funds are available to prior PPA applicants/recipients as well as to new applicants. Grant requests may not exceed $3,000. BCRAC is one of twelve (12) regional service providers selected by the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts (PCA) to administer the PPA Program. BCRAC works in partnership with the PCA to design and create initiatives on a regional level that make a significant impact on arts and cultural opportunities in the Northern Tier counties of Bradford, Sullivan, Susquehanna, Tioga and Wyoming. SCHS Class of '79 Plans Reunion 2004 marks the 25th year since the Class of 1979 graduated from the Susquehanna Community High School. To celebrate this special anniversary, a class reunion is being planned for Saturday, August 14 at PJ O’hare’s on Riverside Drive, Oakland. Classmates are encouraged to attend beginning at 4:00 p.m. for social time and a chicken dinner to be served at 6:00 p.m. Later that evening, music will be provided by the Road Dogs, a local band featuring Alumni Mike Burke. Fiber Festival At Harford Fairgrounds A Pennsylvania Endless Mountains Fiber Festival will be held September 11 and 12, at the Harford Fairgrounds, Harford, PA. There will be displays of raw and processed fibers, yarns, clothing, spinning and weaving, fiber arts and crafts, sheepskin products and more. Breast Cancer Survivor Night At L C Stadium The Komen NEPA Breast Cancer Foundation and The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Red Barons have announced that they will once again team up to host Breast Cancer Survivor Night at Lackawanna County Stadium. This year’s event will be held on Thursday, August 5. The Red Barons will be taking on the Buffalo Bison in a doubleheader with the special program taking place between games. The first game is slated to begin at 5:00 p.m. Festivities will begin immediately following the conclusion of the first of the two 7-inning games that evening. Survivors wearing their Pink Survivor Komen NEPA Race for the Cure T-shirt will receive a free game ticket for that night’s game and fans who wear any white Komen NEPA Race for the Cure T-shirt get half off their game ticket for that night’s game. Ceremonies will be highlighted by the formation of the Pink Survivors Living Ribbon with the assistance of the Seton Catholic High School Cheerleaders. The Pink Survivors Living Ribbon is made up of Breast Cancer Survivors wearing their pink Survivor Komen NEPA Race for the Cure T-shirts. Survivors are encouraged to participate in this celebration of their hope and strength. The Susquehanna County Library has a booth on the Library Lawn in Montrose each year during the KLR's Independence Day celebration (Monday, July 5 this year). This is a kick-off to the Blueberry Festival (August 6 & 7), with T-shirts, sweatshirts, pottery and more for sale. This year's quilt (a sampler pattern, in honor of the 25th anniversary of the Festival) will be on display and chances to win it will be for sale. It's also a refreshing stop for the hordes of visitors, who can get cold drinks, coffee, scones, and other snacks. All proceeds benefit the Library. Contests And Challenges At The Harford Fair Every summer the Harford Fair offers something new in contests, challenges, and activities for participants to try their luck and test their skills. This year there are several interesting items for fairgoers to try to win prizes. In the area of baking delicious treats is the "Blue Ribbon Apple Pie Contest," the certified first place winner of which will have the opportunity to enter an apple pie at the 2005 Pennsylvania State Farm Show. Each pie will be judged on overall appearance, crust color, flavor, texture, filling consistency, and creativity. Entries do not have to be limited to a "traditional" two-crusted apple pie; however, the pie must include at least 60% apples in the filling, which may include a variety of items. Also, this year bakers may enter the "Angel Food Cake Contest," sponsored by the Pennsylvania Egg Quality Assurance Program and the Pennsylvania State Association of County Fairs. This new competitive foods contest should be popular because angel food cakes, classic examples of foam cakes, are 100% fat free. Cakes must be made from scratch and must use PEQAP eggs. The recipe and the PEQAP symbol from the egg carton must be submitted with the entry. Cakes will be judged on overall appearance, texture, crunch, lightness, flavor, creativity, and topping, icing, or decoration. Again this year the "Hershey’s Cocoa Classic Cake Contest" will offer cash prizes for the best "Hershey’s Cocoa Cake" and the tastiest "Hershey’s Baking Chips Cookies/Brownies Bars," made from scratch. Winners can then enter the 2005 Pennsylvania Farm Show next January in Harrisburg. Young ladies interested in entering the 13th annual Harford Fair Queen Contest are encouraged to return applications by the deadline of August 1. This very popular activity is always one of the highlights of the entire week, and contestants are given the opportunity to write and essay and to speak about "What the Harford Fair Means to Me" and "Why You should Come to My Fair." Those chosen as Queen and as Alternate make many special appearances at a variety of events during fair week. Harford Fair Directors are sponsoring a contest to design the cover for the 2005 Fair Book. A very worthwhile project, the design should represent a wide variety of activities that are available for fun and enjoyment when families are spending a day at the fair, e.g., animals, crafts, food, rides, arena shows, the Little Red Schoolhouse, floral and Vegetable halls, and, of course, various exhibits and contests. Included in the design must be 148th Harford Fair, August 22-27, 2005. An innovative feature of the 2004 Harford Fair will be the "Turkey Calling Contest," on Saturday, August 21, from noon to 2:00 PM in the Shade Pavilion. This contest, run by Quaker Boy-Staffer Jim Gilbert, will include the following calls; yelp of a hen, assembly of a hen, cutting of a hen, and caller’s best call. Come to the fair to try out your skills! Among the most enjoyable contests at the Harford Fair are all-time favorites, such as the Baby Show, tractor pulls, horse pulling, animal costume contest, the kiddy tractor pull, lawn mower racing, the Woodsmen’s Contest, and the Demolition Derby. Sen. Madigan To Hold Local Outreaches Harrisburg – State Sen. Roger A. Madigan (R-23) will host outreach events in August to give Susquehanna County residents a chance to ask questions or discuss issues concerning state government. "Constituents are invited to stop by and discuss any problems or questions they might have about state issues or state programs," Madigan said. The senator said on August 13 and 27, staff member Chris McLaud will be available to speak with constituents, from 11 a.m. until 12 p.m. at the Susquehanna County Office Annex, 31 Public Avenue, Montrose and from 2 p.m. until 3 p.m. at the Great Bend/Hallstead Public Library, 201 Franklin Street, Hallstead. Bazaar, Craft Fair At Thompson UMC The Thompson United Methodist Church will be holding their annual bazaar and craft fair on Saturday, September 4 (Labor Day weekend). As in previous years the day will feature numerous craft displays. Lunch at the "Sidewalk Café" and a slice of homemade pie will be hard to resist. A baked goods and special cookie sale will be available, while supplies last. And of course, everyone can find something they need at the "Attic Treasures." Music and entertainment will be provided during the afternoon, and at 5:00 p.m. they will host their famous, all you can eat roast beef dinner, prepared and served by Church members. Harford Fair Sets Opening Program This year's opening program of the 2004 Harford Fair on Sunday, August 15 will be a music and drama presentation by area youth, ages 10 through 19. It will start off your week at the Fair with an inspirational and thought provoking experience. Youth are encouraged to come out to the kick-off practice on Thursday, June 17 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Kingsley Community Church. Practices will be held there each Thursday evening through June and July, with the last few practices in August being held at the Fair grounds. There is no charge to be involved in the program. Muffin Contest At Blueberry Festival One of the highlights of the annual Blueberry Festival for most people is delicious food, which will be available in abundance Friday, August 6, and Saturday, August 7, during the 25th annual Festival. The Blueberry Festival began in 1980 as a fund-raiser for the Susquehanna County Historical Society and Free Library Association, which serves the county with a museum, a main library and three branches (Forest City, Hallstead-Great Bend, Susquehanna), and Books-By-Mail and Books-On-Wheels. Breakfast and lunch will be served on the Village Green during the Festival. For breakfast (8-10:30 a.m.) there will be pancakes with blueberry sauce, sausage, and fruit. At lunch time, the choices will include hamburgers, hot-dogs, Bronx heroes, pizza, and more. Members of the community will provide a variety of food and snacks all day on Friday and Saturday, starting of course with fresh local-grown blueberries. Blueberry muffins, ice cream, pie and other baked goods will be for sale, as well as lemonade and iced tea. Jams, jellies, and produce of all sorts are donated by local people to benefit the Association. You can even keep the Festival flavor going all year by purchasing one of the popular cookbooks featuring local recipes. Once again there will be a Blueberry Muffin Contest. "Many wonderful cooks volunteer to bake muffins for the Festival," says Administrator/Librarian Susan Stone, "and this is a great way to honor the best home-made muffins." The muffins will be judged at 10 a.m. Friday by a panel of local celebrities. Afterwards, winning muffins will be available to buy! To enter, please submit two dozen home-made (no mixes) blueberry muffins by 9:30 a.m. Friday, accompanied by a form available at the Montrose Library ahead of time, on the library's website (www.susqcolibrary.org/bf.htm) or at the Muffin Table Friday morning. Donations of baked goods are needed (please bring to the Library starting Thursday evening), and volunteer workers are still needed. The tenth annual Mega Blood Drive, sponsored by the Susquehanna County American Red Cross and Endless Mountains Health Systems will be held Tuesday, August 3, from 12:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Wednesday, August 4, from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Montrose VFW, Route 706, Montrose. Humane Society Needs Attic Treasures The Susquehanna County Humane Society will host a fundraising yard sale on September 11. Anyone who has items they would like to donate may drop them off at the Susquehanna County Humane Society, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. (closed Wednesday and Sunday), or you can call 278–1228. Items will be accepted until September 4.
The Susquehanna County Historical Society is currently displaying hooked rugs made by Evelyn Lawrence of Hallstead, PA. Evelyn developed patterns of rug designs by Magdalena Briner, a 19th century rug maker from Perry County, PA. The exhibit will be on display until August 7. Be sure to visit the museum during the Blueberry Festival, August 6 and 7.
Positive Thinking At Area Senior Centers The B/S/S/T Area Agency on Aging PrimeTime Health program promotes the health and well-being of older adults through various programs. PrimeTime Health is sponsoring a series of programs to be presented by staff of Tri-County Human Services. The second program in the series will be Positive Thinking. You Could Be The Missing Piece! A bone marrow drive is scheduled in honor of Dave Burns, New Milford, PA and you could be the missing piece! Dave, who is only 36 years old, was diagnosed in March, 2004 with AML, a form of Leukemia (cancer) and is in need of a bone marrow transplant now! His doctors have been searching for a bone marrow or stem cell donor match worldwide since May. No match has been found to date. A team has been working with the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP) and has organized a bone marrow drive on July 31, from 12-4 p.m. at the New Milford Methodist Church, Pratt St., New Milford. If interested, you must be between 18 and 60 years of age and free from cancer, diabetes, and heart disease. This is a simple, finger prick blood test and the whole procedure takes only 30 minutes including the health interview, etc. Your blood type is not a factor. This is very expensive testing. The cost of the marrow drive for HLA tissue typing is $25.00 per person. For those who can afford it, the team would appreciate it if you could pay this fee or some part of it, as it will free up potential resources for more people to be tested. However do not let financial consideration affect your decision to participate as a potential donor. The team has some donated funds to assist those who cannot afford the $25 cost, but want to participate. If you are unable to donate that day, you can still help by financially sponsoring another person to be tested by making a tax deductible donation. Your participation in this event may help Dave, or some other person needing a bone marrow or stem cell transplant and you will be registered with the National Marrow Donor Program.
