She also attended North High and Ridley's Business School in Binghamton before working as a secretary at the Sherwin-Williams Company. She married Lloyd C. Potter on May 16, 1944; he predeceased her on October 15, 2008.
Effie was president of the Kingsley Civic Club for two non-consecutive terms and held various positions in the United Methodist Church of Brooklyn, PA. She was well known for the rhubarb meringue pies she brought to the church's Memorial Day dinner for many years.
Effie sold real estate and was an interior decorating consultant for a few years but was primarily a homemaker and farmer's wife who helped manage and operate Echo Hollow Farm in Brooklyn Township, PA, where she and her husband raised registered Holstein cattle. She had many interests and accomplishments but was most proud of her five children.
In recent years, Effie took an interest in family genealogy and learned that some of her ancestors served in the Revolutionary War. She became a member of the Susquehanna County Chapter, National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution. Her great-great-grandfather, Edward Packer Sr., who came to Brooklyn Township from Connecticut in 1812, was a first cousin of Lehigh University founder Asa Packer.
She is survived by a sister, Mabel (Paul) Walls of Binghamton, NY, and five children, Eileen (James) Kopelman of New Kensington, PA, Lawrence (Judy) Potter of Ringgold, GA, Virginia (Elliot) Popper of Myrtle Beach, SC, Kathryn Maloney of Myrtle Beach, SC, Roselyn (Arvin) Hibbard of Dimock, PA.
