Mt. View Elementary Students Of Month ![]() Blue Ridge High Athlete Of Month ![]() Tri-Cities Opera At Mt. View School Resident Artists of the Tri-Cities Opera (TCO), Binghamton, sang their hearts out for high school students at Mountain View School on Wednesday, February 28. Students in grades 7-12 were treated to an afternoon recital. This is the third year that the Resident Artists have appeared at Mountain View, as a part of the TCO Opera-Go-Round program. Last fall, a select group of art and music upperclassmen were privileged to attend a special student performance of “Glory Denied”, a 21st century opera by composer Tom Cipullo, based on the experiences of Col. Jim Thompson, the longest held Vietnam POW. The recital allowed the entire student body to experience the vocal range, power, and beauty of operatic singing.
Feedback from students included absolute wonder at the singers’ ability to fill a theatre with their thrilling, unmiked voices. Questions from the audience also included inquiries about length of study required to become an opera singer, how many languages an opera singer needs to know and how to deal with stage fright. Each time TCO visits Mountain View, students are provided with the opportunity to experience an art form which showcases incomparable voices, but also introduces them to an art experience which, when fully staged includes amazing orchestration, riveting drama, spectacular sets, lavish costuming and extraordinary special effects. TCO offers aspiring opera singers a unique blend of instruction and practical experience through its Resident Artist Training Program, providing the wide variety of skills required of a professional opera singer. Most Resident Artists have completed both a Bachelor and/or Master of Music Degree. TCO prefers to cast the majority of its operatic roles with members of the Resident Artist Training Program. Performances take place in a rented 1,500-seat performance venue, The Forum Theatre, and in a recently renovated Savoca Hibbitt Hall at the Tri-Cities Opera Center, which can be utilized as a proscenium, thrust, or black-box theatre . OPERA-GO-ROUND, Tri-Cities Opera’s Touring Educational Program, is celebrating 43 years of bringing live musical performances to schools throughout New York and Pennsylvania. Annually, Opera-Go-Round performs for as many as 20,000 students. Our mission is simple: to bring great music to the newest generation of listeners! This year, the children’s opera for K-6 is Jack and the Beanstalk, a vibrant retelling of the classic story set to the music of Sir Arthur Sullivan, with a brand new scenic design by AmArA. Beyond the magic beans and larger-than-life characters, this opera delivers an inspiring message about treating others as you would like to be treated. TCO is proud to welcome creator John Davies to direct this spirited opera featuring Tri-Cities Opera’s 2017-2018 Resident Artists. Interested in booking Opera-Go-Round for your school or venue? There is a program for every age group. TCO’s presence at Mountain View is financially supported by a grant from the Community Foundation of the Endless Mountains.
