Forest City Gets STEM Grant $$

William Graziano, STEM teacher at the Forest City School District, received a grant for science education at the board meeting at Forest City School District on January 15. The science department intends to create large, visually appealing simple machine manipulatives to provide students with an opportunity to experience the use and application of simple machines. It will begin with a pulley investigation station, where students in various math, science, and technology classes can work with multiple types of pulley systems to explore the application of their class content.

The funding will be used to purchase lumber, pulleys, weights, rope and other materials necessary to complete the construction of the investigation station.

Ellen Holdredge, Education Support Chairperson of the Susquehanna Chapter of the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees, presented the grant assisted by John Manchester, president of the chapter.

PASR is pleased to support and encourage public education in Susquehanna County.

PASR Presents Fine Arts Grant

At the Montrose Area School District Board meeting on January 8th, Katherine Luvender, an Art Teacher at Montrose Area High School, was presented a Fine Arts Grant to purchase precious metal clay for her student's use in a Jewelry and Metal Smithing class. PMC is a new medium, consisting of very small particles of metal mixed with an organic binder and water. It can be shaped just like any soft clay, dried, and finally fired, burning away the binder and revealing a pure metal design. The grant will provide her students the opportunity to work with an innovative and exciting medium, in addition to the many techniques and skills that are already a part of the course.

The presentation of the grant was made by Robert McNamara, Region 3 Director, and John Manchester, Susquehanna County President of the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees, on behalf of the membership who are pleased to continue to support public education in all Susquehanna County schools.

Dr. Erin K. Salinkas Earns Doctorate


Dr. Erin K. Salinkas receiving her diploma from NYCC President, Dr. Michael Mestan.

In a graduating ceremony held on December 2, 2017, the Trustees, Administration, Faculty and Graduating Classes of the New York Chiropractic College in Seneca Falls, New York announced the Commencement of Erin Kathleen Salinkas as a Doctor of Chiropractic.

Dr. Erin K. Salinkas is a 2011 Blue Ridge High School graduate, a 2014 Marywood University (Biology) graduate before completing her Doctorate at New York Chiropractic College.

Dr. Erin is the daughter of John and Judi Salinkas, of New Milford, PA.

Colin Turner On CSC Dean's List

Colby-Sawyer College has named Colin Turner to the Dean's List for academic achievement. Turner, of Union Dale majors in exercise science and is a member of the class of 2019.

To qualify for the Dean's List students must achieve a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale while carrying a minimum of 12 credit hours in graded courses.

Keri Jones Makes MAC Honor Roll

Keri Jones of Friendsville, Pa., was named to the Middle Atlantic Conference's (MAC) Fall, 2017 Academic Honor Roll-one of 110 total Lebanon Valley College student-athletes on the list.

Jones, a gradute of Elk Lake School, is a member of the women's cross country team, and is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science at The Valley.

The academic honor roll is comprised of student-athletes who compete in a varsity level sport and registered a term/semester GPA of 3.20 (on a 4.00 scale) or higher. A record 1,463 MAC student-athletes who competed in men's and women's cross country, field hockey, football, men's and women's soccer, and volleyball earned honor roll recognition.

Local Students On CCU Presidents List

Coastal Carolina University has announced that 814 students made the President's honor list for high academic achievement for the 2017 Fall Semester. To qualify for the President's List, students must earn a 4.0 grade point average and must be enrolled full time.

Local students on the President's List for the fall semester include: Kyra Ricci of Montrose, a biology major; Benjamin Woolcock of Springville, a finance major.

Local Students On ESU Dean's List

A total of 1,555 students have been named to the Dean's List at East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania (ESU) for the Fall 2017 semester of the 2017-2018 academic year, according to Joanne Bruno, J.D., provost and vice president for academic affairs. The following local students made the list:

Dane Barhite of Clifford Township, a Sophomore majoring in Early Childhood Educ (PreK-4); Courtney Bognatz of Clifford Township, a Sophomore majoring in Special Education/Early Child; Amber Dubanowitz of Susquehanna, a Senior majoring in Comm Sciences & Disorders; Jacob Hinkley of Hallstead, a Senior majoring in History; Kayla Mecca of Hop Bottom, a Freshman majoring in Undeclared; Elissa Stretch of Meshoppen, a Junior majoring in Psychology; Taylor Watkins of Springville, a Senior majoring in Biology.

Students eligible for the Dean's List are those who have attained a 3.50 quality point average or better and are enrolled full-time.
