County Sheriff Gets Body Armor Donation

Kinder Morgan Inc. contributed $10,000 to the Susquehanna County Sheriff's Office to support the department's enhanced public safety efforts. The funds will be used to purchase new bullet proof vests for the Sheriff's Office.

Fritz’s Office, Chief Deputy Jon Record, Deputy Jesse Pruitt.

“Over 3,000 Officers lives' have been saved due to wearing body armor,” said Susquehanna County Sheriff Lance Benedict. “I'm honored that Kinder Morgan has helped our office and it couldn't have come at a better time, as with many things in our daily life, body armor also has a shelf life.”

“Kinder Morgan is proud to support the Susquehanna County Sheriff's Office as it protects the patrol officers who are working to keep their communities safe,” said Allen Fore, Vice President of Public Affairs for Kinder Morgan. “We appreciate the need to support critical public safety efforts like this and applaud the Sheriff's Office for its leadership.”

A check presentation event occurred on the morning of Thursday, July 27th at the Susquehanna County Sheriff's Office.

Housing Authority Sets Open House

The Susquehanna County Housing/Redevelopment Authority was successful in applying for and  receiving grant funding on behalf of Susquehanna County to purchase and rehabilitate foreclosed or blighted homes to provide safe and affordable housing for the residents of Susquehanna County.

A foreclosed home located at 180 East Church Street in the Borough of Susquehanna, caught the eye of the Housing Authority. This area has been the center of revitalization efforts by the Borough, so it made perfect sense to target this lot for improvement. After a contractor examined the house and felt it was not structurally sound enough to renovate, the grant funding allowed for demolition and replacement with a new structure. The Housing/Redevelopment Authority had a brand new two story, 3 bedroom modular home (pictured above) constructed on this large lot and is now selling the home to an eligible homebuyer. This large lot on a quiet street provides a great yard and room for off street parking. The grant requires potential buyers to meet certain income criteria to purchase the home. Buyers would need to become qualified for a mortgage through a lending institution of their choice as the grant did not provide for financing of the homes.  Anyone interested in purchasing this home can call the Susquehanna County Housing/Redevelopment Authority at 570-278-5401 for information. There will be an open house on Saturday August 12th from 9am-noon for interested buyers.

The funding for this Neighborhood Stabilization project was made possible by the Pennsylvania Housing Affordability and Rehabilitation Enhancement Fund(PHARE). This funding was awarded to the Susquehanna County Commissioners and administered by Susquehanna County Housing/Redevelopment Authority. The Borough was also recently awarded Susquehanna County CDBG funding to remove a blighted home adjacent to this lot, enhancing the revitalization efforts on Church Street.

Pet of the Week

Birdie

Sweet Birdie originally came into a neighboring shelter with a bruised face, very scared, and most likely feeling very hopeless.  An eye witness actually saw her owner punch her in the face because she had ran away from home.  It’s really unimaginable what this poor girl has been through, but at True Friends she now feels safe and fill of hope that her life is getting better.  Birdie is around 2 years old, spayed, and just the sweetest girl.  It takes her a little bit not to be shy, especially with men, but she warms up very quickly, craving attention and the gentleness she has found humans can give.  She is good with other dogs, children, and loves to cuddle and give lots of kisses. Birdie very much enjoys her walks at the shelter and could make a great walking partner. Please stop by and meet Birdie, she truly deserves the love and comfort of a home where she is safe, cherished, and cared for with the kindness of a loving hand.

Woofstock 2017 is less than 1 month away and it is gong to be another incredible day on Saturday, August 19th at Salt Springs Park.  Pre-sale tickets are only $10 and now available at the shelter.  We hope to see you and your four legged friend this year to help celebrate True Friends’ 6th year anniversary.

First Nationally Designated Bicycle Route

Harrisburg, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) today announced the designation of Pennsylvania’s first nationally designated bicycle route - U.S. Bicycle Route 50.

The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) officially approved the route in May making Pennsylvania the 25th state to join the developing U.S. Bicycle Route System (USBRS).

“We are very proud to have, along with our partners, developed more than 160 miles of trails and roadway for U.S. Bicycle Route 50,” said Leslie S. Richards, Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) Secretary. “We expect the designation of U.S. Bicycle Route 50 to result in significant transportation, health, and economic benefits to the region.”

The 163-mile route mostly follows off-road trails, including the popular Great Allegheny Passage, Montour Trail, and the Panhandle Trail and connects Maryland to West Virginia through a variety of natural and agricultural landscapes, historical sites, thriving small towns, and recreational hot spots. Cyclists can visit restored rail stations; Ohiopyle State Park, which has some of the best white water rafting on the East Coast; Point State Park in Pittsburgh; and the nearby Fort Pitt Museum.

“What an honor to have sections of the Montour Trail -- our 2017 Trail of the Year -- the Great Allegheny Passage and other trails comprising much of this first nationally designated bicycle route,” said Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Secretary Cindy Adams Dunn. “Trails connect communities and destinations to each other; people to the outdoors and healthy exercise; and attract visitors who spend money. They also serve as testament to the commitment of so many incredible volunteers who help them grow.”

Additionally, Amtrak’s Capitol Limited route parallels U.S. Bicycle Route 50 between DC and Pittsburgh and offers the opportunity for cyclists to carry their bikes on or off the train at any station. This multimodal option allows for more flexibility to plan bicycle trips without a car.

To see the placement of USBR 50 in Pennsylvania visit “Statewide Bike Routes” at PennDOT’s “Ride a Bike” page at www.penndot.gov

TreeVitalize Grants Available

Harrisburg, PA - Applications are being accepted for grants to help restore tree cover across Pennsylvania , Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Secretary Cindy Adams Dunn announced on June 28.

“Launched on Arbor Day 2004 in Philadelphia, TreeVitalize efforts already have planted more than 350,000 shade trees in Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and other cities and communities,” Dunn said. “With today’s announcement of grant opportunities, those benefits will be extended across the state and residents hopefully will enjoy them in every county.”

This year applications will be considered in three funding categories: tree planting, urban riparian buffers or community forestry management. One applicant can seek grants in all three categories, however only one can be approved during each grant term.

Secretary Dunn noted a House GOP - proposed budget could have possible negative effects on future DCNR funding of TreeVitalize and other grant - based department programs TreePennsylvania, formerly Pennsylvania Urban & Community Forestry Council, administers the statewide TreeVitalize grant program. Funding is provided to communities to promote and develop sustainable urban forestry programs within Pennsylvania.

Applications are being accepted through 4 p.m. Aug. 15, and must be submitted via email to Development and Grants Coordinator Jessica Cavey  c-jcavey@pa.gov. To apply for a grant or learn more about the application process, visit https://treepennsylvania.org.

Funded through DCNR’s Bureau of Forestry grants and municipal, private agency and company involvement, and overseen by the Pennsylvania Urban and Community Forestry Council, TreeVitalize is dependent on community support to increase tree canopies across the state, and educate and engage citizens in the care and selection of these new trees.

Tree Pennsylvania is a state-wide, non-profit organization dedicated to nurturing the growing forests throughout Pennsylvania’s urban landscape.
