We are well into the second half of our school year. Exciting things are happening at the SCCTC. Through the generosity of the SCCTC staff and students, the holiday season gave us the opportunity to give back to the community by helping 18 local families have a great Christmas. We also made toys in our Carpentry and Cabinetmaking Program for the Marines to donate to “Toys for Tots”; as well as doghouses for the True Friends Animal Shelter in Montrose, benches for the Susquehanna County Courthouse and Adirondack chairs for the PA School Board Association. We are once again in the planning stage of our “Annual Car Show” to support the Pennsylvania Wounded Warriors Foundation. Our Cosmetology Program provided complimentary services to our Veterans this year and the Food Management program provided a luncheon for them as well.
First and foremost, our number one priority is in educating the high school students from our 7 sending school districts; Blue Ridge, Elk Lake, Lackawanna Trail, Montrose Area, Mountain View, Susquehanna Community and Tunkhannock Area. Since most of our programs are approved as State Programs of Study, our students now graduate with college credits at many of our state community colleges and universities.
We have continued to increase our Adult Program offerings and Certification Courses for the community. Our Practical Nurse Program has been a huge undertaking and thanks to our Nursing staff has proven to be extremely successful. We graduated our fourth class on March 11, 2016. We have partnered with Luzerne County Community College and now offer an LPN to RN program for our Practical Nursing students to continue nursing education while working as a LPN. The Massage Therapy Program has more than doubled their enrollment for the second year. We constantly offer certification classes in ServSafe for the restaurant industry, PA Automotive Inspection Classes, OSHA and Lead Renovation, Repair and Painting Courses to name a few.
We received a grant to offer a Re-Engaging the Adult Learner Program to the adult community to cross train them in the Health Care field in Nurse Aid, Pharmacy Technician, EKG Technician Certification and Phlebotomy. The program has been extremely successful and we are so grateful to Susquehanna County Housing and Redevelopment Authority for helping us in securing the Community Development Block Grants to fund this program. Our third Re-Engaging the Adult Learner class graduated in February 2016.
As part of our hands-on training environment, we offer many services to the public through our Food Management, Cosmetology, Massage Therapy and Automotive programs. Please go to our website and click on” Community Outreach” for details. We love to have the public experience first- hand the results of the training the SCCTC students receive, so please take advantage of our Community Outreach programs. If you want to check out our most recent house project, it is under construction on Hunsinger Road in Dimock, PA.
If there is ever anything I can do for any community member, please do not hesitate to contact me at 570-278-6783 or email alice.davis@scctc-school.org.
