LOGANO WINS FREAKY TALLADEGA RACE

Joey Logano Wins Freaky Talladega race

TALLADEGA, Ala.—Joey Logano won his third consecutive Sprint Cup race as he edged out Dale Earnhardt Jr. in a weird and unorthodox ending of Sunday’s race.

“This scenario is unbelievable,” said Logano. “Man, what a crazy ending. We played by NASCAR’s rules and that’s the way it turned.”

NASCAR had said there would only be one green-white-checkered finish at Talladega, but were there two?

It depends on who you ask.

During the first g-w-c restart, several cars in the middle of the pack got together. Six cars spun out, before they crossed the starting line. NASCAR displayed the yellow flag, and called for another restart.

According to officials, the green had been given, but not all the cars had crossed the starting line, so there had not been a complete restart.

The cars lined back up and right after the second restart, sixteen cars either, bumped, crashed or wrecked right after the green flag was given.

The yellow flag was back out, but this time NASCAR put out the checkered flag as the field came back around to the start/finish line, and Logano was declared the winner.

Dale Earnhardt Jr., who had led 61 laps of the 196-lap race was scored second. He had lined up on the inside of Logano on the final two restarts, and his front bumper was only inches in back of Logano’s when the final caution came out, ending the race.

“I thought I was going to win, but those are the rules,” said Earnhardt. “I’m proud of what we did today. We were where we needed to be, and that’s all I could ask for.”

Talladega is certainly Earnhardt country, and many of his fans threw debris on the track in protest. Despite finishing second, Earnhardt was one of the four drivers eliminated from the Chase.

Jeff Gordon finished third and remains in the Chase.

Brad Keselowski, Carl Edwards, Paul Menard, Martin Truex, Clint Bowyer, Ricky Stenhouse, and Kurt Busch were the remaining top-10 finishers.

Kyle Busch was 13th, and was able to move into the third round of the Chase.

Denny Hamlin had a good chance of continuing in the Chase, but about midway of the race, a piece of sheet metal came loose on the top of his car and he had to pit for repairs. On the last g-w-c restart, he was one of the cars involved in the big pileup. He finished 37th.

“I think we did everything we could do,” said Hamlin. “The roof flap was a fluke, but what really did us in was on that last restart. The 4-car (Kevin Harvick) could only run about 30 miles per hour, and there was no place to go. It’s a shame that one bad race took us out.”

Ryan Newman and Matt Kenseth were the two remaining drivers that failed to advance.

The eight Chase leaders that will enter round three are: 1. Joey Logano, 2. Carl Edwards, 3. Jeff Gordon, 4. Kurt Busch, 5. Brad Keselowski, 6. Martin Truex, 7. Kevin Harvick, 8. Kyle Busch. These eight drivers all have their points reset to 4000.

Note: This is next to the final round in the Chase. The next two races are known as the Eliminator round, and will consist of races at Martinsville and Texas. The field will be eliminated to four drivers after the Phoenix race, and their points will be reset to 5000. The fourth and final Championship round will be decided at Homestead, Fla, the last race of the season. The driver with the best finish among the top four will be the 2015 Sprint Cup champion.

PETERS GETS TALLADEGA TRUCK WIN

Timothy Peters won Saturday’s Truck race at Talladega for the second year in a row.

Brandon Jones was second, followed by Mason Mingus, Erik Jones, Tyler Reddick, Cameron Hayley, Johnny Sauter, Chris Fontaine, Chad Boat, and Tyler Young.

Top-10 leaders after 19 of 23 races: 1. E. Jones-742, 2. Reddick-724, 3. Crafton-719, 4. Sauter-687, 5. Peters-642, 6. Hayley-622, 7. Hemric-612, 8. Townley-594, 9. Kennedy-565, 10. Gallagher-559.

KAHNE AND GIRLFRIEND HAVE NEW BABY

One of the few good things that have happened to Kasey Kahne this racing season is the birth of a son.

The 35-year-old driver of the No. 5 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet and girlfriend Sam Sheets welcomed a baby boy, Tanner Lee Kahne, earlier this week.

“It's something that's been on my mind for a long time," he added. “I'm really excited to have this type of life-changing experience, and I can't wait to be the best dad I can possibly be.”

Kahne needed some good news because he failed to make this year’s Chase. In addition, he has not won a Sprint Cup race since the 2014 Atlanta race, and is 18th in points.

He had a career-best fourth-place finish in the 2012 Chase, his first season with Hendrick Motorsports. That season he had two wins, four pole positions, 12 top-five finishes and 19 top-10s.

In 2013, Kahne had another two-win season in addition to posting 11 top-five finishes, but slipped to 13th in the final points.

He earned his third straight Chase appearance with Hendrick Motorsports in 2014. At the conclusion of the season, he had dropped to 15th.

During the 2014 Chase for the Sprint Cup, he notched only one top-10. Hendrick moved crew chief Kenny Francis to a management role and brought in Keith Rodden (who was Kahne’s engineer for several seasons before spending 2014 as a crew chief for Jamie McMurray).’

“As far as my performance, I wanted to be better and do better,” Kahne said. “When I didn’t at times, things crossed my mind like, ‘Man, what is my problem. Can I not figure this out?’

“But it’s racing. I love it. I know I can do it. I know if we put the right situation together, we’re going to win a lot of races still.”

After 31 races into the 36 race season Kahne only has three top-five finishes and nine top-10s. Plus, he’s only led 48 laps. Not good for one of the top teams in the sport. While his contract with Hendrick is through 2018, he must do better next season.

Weekend Racing: The Trucks and Sprint teams are at the .52-mile Martinsville Speedway. The Xfinity teams do not race again until Nov.7.

Racing Trivia Question: How many races has Dale Earnhardt Jr. won this season?
