Recreation Center Basketball Tourney

Plans are underway for the creation of the Susquehanna County Recreation Center (SCRC), a location which will be the nucleus of the county to promote health and wellness (physically, socially, and mentally) for all age groups. Operating as a non-profit organization, the center will encourage family participation to include a fitness center, indoor track, gymnastics area, indoor courts for basketball and volleyball, areas for ice hockey, outdoor fields for baseball, softball, soccer and field hockey, swimming pools, concessions, as well as meeting areas for social clubs, arts and crafts, and birthday parties.

To jump-start fundraising efforts for the Susquehanna County Recreation Center (SCRC) to become a reality, a 5-on-5 Susquehanna County Alumni Basketball Tournament is being held Saturday, June 27, 2015, at Mountain View School District. The goal of the county-wide center is to provide local individuals, families, and organizations with an area to promote health and wellness.

On June 27, 2015, the First Annual Susquehanna County Alumni Basketball Tournament will take place at Mountain View School District to “jump-start” a major fund raising event in the steps to making this dream become a reality. This unique event will be an opportunity for old rivals to once again lace up their sneakers and compete for bragging rights and is open to all alumni of Susquehanna County School Districts (Blue Ridge, Elk Lake, Forest City, Montrose, Mountain View, and Susquehanna Community). Students from the Class of 2015 and past alumni are invited to form teams of five or more players to compete in a 5-on-5 basketball tournament. There will be two age groups, 18-30 and 30+, with a men’s and women’s division.

The cost is $20 per player which includes a tournament t-shirt along with food vouchers and other items in a player welcome bag. (Pre-registration is encouraged in order to provide tournament t-shirts in your school district’s colors). Registration at the event will begin at 8:30 AM. Tournament tip-off is set for 9:00 AM with a mid-day skills competition to showcase talents such as free-throw shooting, 3-point shooting and half-court shots.

“I can’t play basketball let alone play in a tournament,” you say. No need to worry. You can still be a part of this unique event in a family-friendly atmosphere with a silent auction and food/drink concessions held throughout the day. Tournament participants (players, sponsors or spectators) will be joining a list of local and national organizations that have already supported the vision of SCRC. This list includes individuals, families, local townships, sports leagues, school districts, and businesses. Businesses and individuals interested in contributing can do so by making monetary or non-monetary sponsorships with recognition given in the tournament’s event program.

Alumni interested in registering teams for this event or those seeking to be sponsors are encouraged to contact Ashley Kilmer by email (alkilmer_32@yahoo.com) or by phone (570-280-6263). Go to the Susquehanna Community Recreation Center’s Facebook page for forms for the tournament, more information, and the details of the overall goal of the recreation center.

Vitale Scholarship At The Community Foundation

Applications for the John J. and Ann Vitale Scholarship are due at the Community Foundation of the Endless Mountains by July 1. The scholarship was established in 2005 to assist college seniors financially.

John Vitale, who passed away in March 2006, was a self-made entrepreneur who believed in lending a hand to those who demonstrated a willingness to work hard toward their goals.

The scholarship award, in the amount of $2,000 for 2015, is available to any student who graduated from a high school in Susquehanna County, is entering the final year or term at any college and is on track to graduate in 2016.

All degree fields, whether undergraduate or graduate, are considered as long as the student has taken on personal debt toward his education. Prior applicants who have gone on to advanced degrees are eligible to apply, whether or not they were successful previously.

The application form and particulars are available online at the Community Foundation website (go to Scholarship, Adult for the information) www.community- foundation.org.
