HARRISBURG - Rep. Tina Pickett (R-Bradford/Sullivan/Susquehanna) recently announced the 2015 adult trout stocking schedules are now available in preparation for opening day of trout season in April.
More than 700 streams and 120 lakes will be stocked as a part of the commission’s 2015 adult trout stocking program. The PFBC will stock nearly 3 million adult trout in Pennsylvania rivers and streams that are open to the public for fishing.
About 53 percent of the trout are stocked prior to opening day, 43 percent are stocked between opening day and the end of May, and the remaining 4 percent are stocked from October through February of the following year.
Opening day of trout season will Saturday, April 18, for counties along the Northern Tier.
Copies of the trout stocking schedules, including a searchable database, can be found online at www.RepPickett.com. A limited number of hard copies of the trout stocking schedules may also be obtained at her offices at 321 Main St., Towanda, and 106 W. Packer Ave., Sayre.
We all have heard about how important calcium is for building strong bones, but did you know that your body needs calcium every time your muscles contract? When one of your muscles needs to contract, a message is sent from your brain to something called a neuromuscular junction. The message causes a chemical, Ach, to be released thus depolarizing your muscle’s membrane. From there, another message is sent along an area called the T tubules, which is where calcium is stored. Calcium is released and works alongside two proteins causing contraction to begin.
For a muscle to relax, calcium is taken out of the muscle and is placed back into the T tubules where it can be stored for later use. Without calcium, our muscles would not be able to contract. That being said, only when there is sufficient calcium in our bodies, can they work like they are supposed to.
Only 1% of the calcium you intake is stored in the T tubules. The other 99% is stored directly in your bones. If you do not take in enough calcium each day, your muscles will take the calcium out of your bones to use in their contraction. If this happens frequently, you could develop osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is a medical condition in which the bones become brittle and weak due to loss of bone tissue and is usually caused by a lack of calcium.
To ensure that you are giving your body enough calcium for proper muscle function, be sure to consume three dairy products every single day. Dairy products contain just the right amount of calcium to keep you strong and healthy. So whether you are power lifting 300 pounds, or just blinking your eyelid, milk, cheese, and yogurt will help your muscles power through.
