Letters to the Editor Policy

Giuliani Vs. Dyson

It was fight night at Meet The Press. At the top of the card was a grudge match between two heavyweights, former mayor of NYC, Rudy Giuliani, and Prof. Michael Dyson out of Georgetown University. The fans were not disappointed. Both corners came out swingin'. The issue was black homicides.

Giuliani landed first with a solid right to the chin: “Ninety-three percent of blacks in America are killed by other blacks.” Concerning white-on-black homicides, “We're talking about the exception here.”

Dyson shook it off and delivered one to the midsection: “This is a defensive mechanism of white supremacy at work in your mind, sir.” It was a low blow. The ref stopped the fight and warned him about the “white supremacy” remark. The fight continued.

Dyson, undeterred, connected with an uppercut, his best punch of the fight: “Eighty-four percent of white homicide victims were killed by other whites. Why not talk about white-on-white murders?”

Giuliani jabbed relentless at Dyson's weak point: “93 percent of black homicides victims are killed by other blacks.”

While the judges are comparing their cards, let's examine the stats. First, Giuliani's 93 percent.

According to the latest FBI statistics, blacks committed 2,491 homicides in 2012. Of these 2,245 were by black assailants. That's 90 percent of blacks who were killed in a homicide were same-race victims. Giuliani's figure for 2010 was right on the money.

But what about Dyson's “84 percent of white homicides were white-on-white.” Dyson stat is correct. Comparing the 93 percent blacks with the 83 percent whites the races seem to be roughly similar in self-destructiveness. But that's misleading because it fails to take in to account the difference in white and black demographics.

There are roughly six times as many whites as blacks. We can compensate for this difference by using units of 100,000. For white-on-white homicides it is 1 per 100,000, and for black-on-black homicides it is 6 per 100,000. Blacks are their own worst enemies, not whites and certainly not the police.

Giuliani gets the decision, but the fight continued in another arena, Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts.

It seems there was a slogan slug-fest between the students and the college's President Kathleen McCartney.

The students fought for, “Black Lives Matter.” McCartney chose a more reasoned, “All Lives Matter.” Big mistake. Reason doesn't matter. As a rule, academics cave quickly, but McCartney's servile reply set a speed record.

McCartney apologized and thanked those who “shared their wisdom and wise counsel.” “All Lives Matter” went down for the count. But why the fuss?

The slogan infers that many people believe that black lives do not matter. They are singled out by police, brutalized, arrested, and incarcerated. They carry a historic burden of slavery and prejudice. And they are denied the opportunities so freely given to whites.

But what if the grievance gurus---Obama, Holder, Sharpton, and JJ--- could no longer use whites, in mufti or in blue uniforms, as their whipping boy?

Meet the new race on the block.

Take a look at the undergraduates in California's three top state schools: UC Berkeley, 41 percent. Asians; UC Los Angeles, 40 percent Asians; and UC San Diego, 42 percent Asians. The universities look like Asian enclaves. What's astounding is that Asians make-up only 5 percent of the population. Five percent!

This accomplishment is all the more remarkable since Asians were always looked down upon as creatures of a lesser god. “You don't have a china-man’s chance” is an adage borne of hard times. Yet they excel.

UC state universities are forbidden by law to consider race in admissions. Suppose other top-flight schools had a similar race-blind admissions policy. One wonders, Would Asians predominate there as well?

Three fights: on TV, in Smith College, in California's state schools, and probably other confrontations yet to come. The protestors will shout their rallying cry, “Black Lives Matter,” as if the FBI statistics don't matter; “Black Lives Matter,” as if they don't matter; and “Black Lives Matter,” as if the accomplishments of Asians don't matter. But they do.

Sincerely,

Bob Scroggins
