Children’s Choir Begins New Season
Submitted by Christine Sezer
The Endless Mountains Children’s Choir is inviting all children who love to sing to join the concert choir. We are a community choir looking for new members to join us in making beautiful music together. We are starting our Fall/Winter season rehearsals on Thursday October 2, 2014 at the South Gibson United Methodist Church, South Gibson, PA. If you have a child that loves to sing- please bring them to this rehearsal - rehearsal begins at 6:30PM and ends at 8:00PM.
This year we have lost members due to so many that have graduated. So we are looking for new members to rebuild our choir so we can continue to share beautiful music with the community. Children from any grade level are welcome. There is NO tuition cost and choir robes will be provided for the children. Rehearsals are every Thursday, 6:30PM to 8:00PM at the Church.
The children will have many opportunities to peform all kinds of beautiful music and learn to sing music in languages from many countries (we have sung in 13 different languages inluding American sign language) They will have opportunities to sing solos in the concerts. They will travel to interesting places to perform wonderful concerts - we have performed at Kosciusko observance at West Point (the first children’s choir ever to perform there); we performed an evening holiday concert at the National Christmas tree in Washington, D.C. (2 years); a holiday concert at the capital in Harrisburg (3 years); Lithuanian Heritage Day at the Anthracite Museum (3 years, various Christmas tree lightings in various communities; concerts at local hospitals, nursing homes and senior centers; holiday concerts at the local shopping malls; concerts at the Harford fair; concerts at community and county organizations; after attending the Radio City Christmas show we sang some holiday songs at the Rockerfeller Christmas tree; Cancer fund rasing event at the Scranton Cultural Center. These just the highlights of activities and local community events and concerts that we as a community choir have done and will continue to do.
There are still other valuable performance opportunities that are offered to the children by being a member of the choir: children have the opportunity to audition and participate in the American Choral Directors Association (Dr. Sezer is the ACDA Northeast Chair) ACDA-PA All-State Honors Choir (we have had students in that choir every year for the past 4 years); ACDA All Eastern Division Honors Choir (we have had students in that choir for the past 3 years); ACDA National Honors Choir (we have had students in that 1 year). We have also had a student sing with a national honor choir in Carnegie Hall this past February. Our students have also been members of the PA District and Regional Honor Chorus and Susquehanna County Chorus.
Of interest to the parents/guardians is the children are taught proper vocal training. The child’s voice is very fragile in its development - proper vocal techniques-breath control, posture, vocal placement, blend, intonation (singing in tune), dynamics/vocal volume (especially when children’s vocal chords are being developed), musicianship, expression, phrasing, proper diction, proper foreign language pronouciation - these are all implemented into the weekly training that the children receive. The children also learn about other world cultures through the music that they sing from these cultures. Many of the multicultural music includes authentic movement to the music the children are performing which also adds to the education of the culture of that particular country. The children also learn to perform music in American Sign Language - widely used by the deaf for communication.
Children are also taught some music theory-Kodaly (sol/fa or solfege), rhythmic reading, notation; we also teach your child to perform on Orff instruments and other rhythm instruments in conjunction with their choral performances. If your child is proficient on an instrument (piano, flute, violin, etc.) we try to give your child an opportunity to use that instrument with the choir in a choral performance. So as you see by being a member of the choir there are vast educational/musical opportunities other than just singing a song— the most important of all is to share one’s love and passion for music and enjoy doing it. Please give your child this unique and very special opportunity - let him or her join our wonderful choir - you will be proud. For more information please contact Dr. Christine Plonski Sezer (570) 756-2729 Email drcsezer@yahoo.com or drcsezer@gmail.com. Dr. Sezer has a vast background in choral music, and many years (45) of choral teaching and conducting - she has traveled with her children’s concert choir nationally and internationally and has had the distinct honor of conducting the Vienna Boys Choir in concert and a holiday concert at the White House with her NJ Chamber Singers Children’s Choir.

County Reads Comm. Travels With Charley
Submitted by Liz Holbert
The Susquehanna County Reads Committee is pleased to announce the seventh year of the County Reads Program. The selection for 2014 is Travels with Charley: in Search of America, the classic travelogue by American author, John Steinbeck. Travels with Charley highlights Steinbeck’s 1960s road trip adventure accompanied by his standard poodle, Charley. Weary of his New England home, Steinbeck sets off from his New England home to rediscover America firsthand. He reports his findings in unique Steinbeck style. The County Reads program is brought to you by the Susquehanna County Library.
Residents of Susquehanna County can register and get their own copy of the book (there is a registration fee. Registration started on Monday, September 22nd) at any county library: the Montrose, Hallstead-Great Bend, Susquehanna, and Forest City locations of the Susquehanna County Historical Society & Free Library Association, or Pratt Memorial Library in New Milford. Those who register will be able to participate in several exciting programs and events, such as a Panel Discussion, a Ken Burns Documentary viewing, “Read-to-a-Dog” events and a special visit from WNEP Channel 16’s Mike Stevens. Throughout the month of October, the county libraries will accept donations of canned cat food (Friskee’s pate preferred), and canned dog food (Alpo preferred), for the True Friends Animal Welfare Center, a no-kill animal shelter in Montrose. Horse Sessions To Be Held
Submitted by Gina Yarrish
South Gibson, PA-Linda Pucci, Ph.D., psychologist, life coach and certified trainer at Inner Resource Center, LLC will be partnering with Gina Yarrish, Equine Specialist and owner of Yar-Corte Acres to demonstrate equine assisted learning and how horses can teach you about taking your business to the next level.
The demonstration is free and open to business owners and entrepreneurs who are curious about how activities with horses can help them in the business world. There are two sessions scheduled for Wednesday, October 8 at Yar-Corte Acres. The morning session is from 8:30AM to 11:30 AM for education staff of colleges, public, charter and private schools and the afternoon session is from 1 PM to 4 PM for business and corporate office staff.
There is no riding or horsemanship involved. Participants interact with the horses on the ground in specially designed goal-oriented activities. "It's pretty powerful," says Pucci. "Horses can read us and know when we don't mean what we say. They keep us on track and honest. The activities and follow-up discussion of what happened during the exercise often lead to 'aha' moments."
We often don't see what's broken or that something can be better even when things are well until we interact with horses. Giving us our reflection which becomes an awareness (experiential). When we can see, be aware, the learning is much faster, more powerful and lasting. "It's hard to understand until you experience it," says Yarrish. “You might not think that horses could help you become more successful, but they can."
Pucci and Yarrish will have volunteer participants demonstrate activities with the horses in this 2 1/2 hour demonstration. Participants will be able to experience firsthand how a workshop with horses can help them become more successful in business when you can build better teams and develop stronger communication.
For more information about this demonstration, go to www.yarcorteacres.com to register. You can also contact Gina Yarrish at 570-877-3655/gina.yarrish@yarcorteacres.com or contact Linda Pucci at 865-983-7544/Linda@InnerResourceCenter.com . Although the demonstration is free, participants must be pre-registered to attend. Additional information will be sent, including directions, when you register.
