Garden Tour Set

Penn State Master Gardeners in Susquehanna County in partnership with the Montrose Adult School and the Garden Club of Montrose are taking part in a Mid-Summer Garden Tour. The tour of 6 gardens takes place on Saturday, July 12, beginning at 9:00 a.m. and ending between 3 and 4:00 p.m.

Master Gardener Gayle O’Brien will be presenting a session on ‘Adaptive Gardening: Gardening for Those with Disabilities’ at her garden in Brooklyn. Gayle’s program which she calls “The Able Garden” will explore alternative gardening technics. Age, accident or disability should not stop you from your passion for gardening or from starting a rewarding new hobby. Adapt your garden to your capabilities and relieve frustration by learning, new, familiar ways of doing things.

She will cover the concepts of simple planning to save stress and strains. Proper stretching, the garden design and plant content, special tools and equipment, watering methods, moving and storage of equipment among other topics will be discussed. Whether you choose a window sill, container, raised bed or small plot the spiritual gratification of gardening is attainable for all.

Please join us for a day full of gardening adventure as we visit six of our neighbor’s gardens and explore many other interesting garden topics such as organic gardening, drip irrigation, composting, Lasagna Garden, mushroom gardening, shade, perennials, annuals, herbs, Hostas on a weedy bank, ponds and critters, Pollinator Garden, drainage problems, raised beds vegetables, tunnels for extended gardening, succession planting and more (can there be more?).

Participants will gather as a group at St. Paul’s Church in Montrose to hear an overview of what we will be visiting and what in particular we would like you to observe. We will divide into smaller groups with a team leader and leave in car pools to each of the 6 gardens. Please bring a packed lunch and a bottle of water, a camera, a notepad and wear comfortable (garden) shoes. To register: visit www.montroseadultschool.org. There is a cost for this tour.

Pickett Sets Up July Satellite Hours

Rep. Tina Pickett (R-Bradford/Sullivan/Susquehanna) today reminds residents of the 110th District that her satellite district offices in Lawton and Laporte will be staffed on four Wednesdays throughout the month of July.

“My satellite office hours on Wednesday allow residents of some of the more rural areas of the district to have their questions about state government answered or to share their concerns with my staff and me,” Pickett said. “All of the services available at my full-time office locations in Towanda and Sayre are available at these locations. I encourage people to stop by or call with questions.”

Pickett’s staff will be on hand to help constituents in Sullivan County from 10 a.m. until noon on the first and fifth Wednesdays of the month – July 2 and July 30, at the commissioners’ office in the Sullivan County Courthouse in Laporte.

Hours for her Susquehanna County satellite office will be held on the second Wednesday, July 9, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Flynn’s Consignment Shop, which is located along State Route 706, in Lawton. Residents can reach the office by calling (570) 934-2557.

“In addition to these office hours, we have two upcoming events designed to help veterans access services available to them and senior citizens learn about a variety of local programs,” Pickett said. “I encourage any veteran or senior, or their family members and caregivers, to mark the following events on their calendars or to make an appointment.”

To help veterans in the northern area of Bradford County, Pickett’s Sayre district office will host free veterans assistance hours provided by the American Legion Service Officer Outreach Program on the third Thursday of each month from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. The date for this month will be July 17.

As part of the outreach, Gina Svoboda, a department service officer with the American Legion, can help with compensation, pension, death benefits, education and health care, as well as any issues pertaining to benefits for veterans. Veterans do not need to be a member of the American Legion to receive these services. Appointments can be made by calling Pickett’s Sayre office at (570) 888-9011.

Pickett also reminded residents that both of her offices will be closed on Thursday, July 24, as staff will be on hand at the 14th annual Senior Expo in Athens.

Pickett’s full-time offices are located at 321 Main St., Towanda, phone (570) 265-3124 and 106 West Packer Ave., Sayre, phone (570) 888-9011. More information is available 24 hours a day on Pickett’s website at www.RepPickett.com  or on her Facebook fan page at www.Facebook.com/RepPickett. Residents can also sign up via her website to receive a weekly email about local and state activities.
