Biblical History Comes To Life

The Living Way of the Cross was introduced 17 years ago to Holy Name of Mary Church by then pastor Father Jim Nash. It has since become a rite of passage for the parish youth and an ecumenical Lenten prayer offering for the public.

The youth will once again bring the Way of the Cross to life 7 p.m., April 13, at HNM church, 278 S. Main St., Montrose.

Newly installed HNM Pastor Philip Rayappan anxiously awaits his first glimpse of the youth in action on this momentous faith journey.

This year, the reenactment is directed by Donna Horn and Way of the Cross alumnus Jacob Horn. Whether an actor, singer, stagehand, set designer, seamstress, musician or photographer this production offers an opportunity for all ages and talents to bring Christ’s Passion to life.

The cast of characters range in age from 1st grade to high school seniors from Montrose, Elk Lake, Blue Ridge and Mt. View school districts. Major roles include: Tom Lennox portraying Jesus, Callie Curley as Mary, Samatha Dietz as Veronica, Joe Vaccaro as Peter, Jonas Fuller as the head soldier and Ed Fish as Pilot.

Guest soloist Paula K. Placko, whose hauntingly beautiful voice touches the heart and soul, again joins the HNM choir and its gifted soloists Amy Johnson, Tom Welch, Joe Varacco and Corky Staats.

Jean Starzec, who serves as organist and music director, reported with anticipation, “New this year, Corky will be singing his original song ‘Thy Will be Done’ during the poignant agony in the garden scene.”

The extraordinary combined musical talents promise to transport the audience into sacred scripture.

Authentic costuming and cleverly designed props courtesy of gifted seamstresses and woodworkers include many from the original performance and those added throughout the enactments long history.

Special thanks this year to ‘The Needlers’ group who took time from making quilts for the homeless to repair some of the aging costumes.

Sound effects, photography, video, set design and lighting through the collective talents of Gary Horn, Patrick Bayer (another Way of the Cross alumnus), Dan Kaminski, Tom Lennox and Ed Leucke bring heart-pounding reality to the historic scenes. Lightning flashes, roaring thunder and the somber sound of the pounding of nails all build up to the glorious Resurrection scene bringing the production to its Hallelujah conclusion.

Humbled by overwhelming parish support, Donna Horn said, “We couldn’t accomplish this without the help of the parents, volunteers and the infectious enthusiasm of the youth.”

Speaking for the entire Way of the Cross crew, Father Philip invites the public to share in this teaching and learning Lenten observance.
