Manure Management Workshops Planned
Submitted by Robert Wagner
The Susquehanna County Conservation District (SCCD) is planning two manure management workshops. The workshops will be focused on the laws and regulations of the new manure management requirements set forth by the DEP. Until recently, small horse, chicken, goat and other exotic animal operations were not required to develop any type of manure or nutrient management plan.
In 2006, Pennsylvania’s Nutrient Management Act was revised to include small farm operations in the regulations. Under Act 38, all animal operations are required to complete a Nutrient Management Plan if the farm is defined as a Concentrated Animal Operation (CAO) or a Confined Animal Feeding Operation (CAFO). DEP also revised the Clean Stream Act, released in fall of 2011, which mandates that small farm and livestock operations that are not classified as a CAO or CAFO, as well as all farms that apply manure must have a written Manure Management Plan. So today, any livestock operations in Pennsylvania - large and small, production and non-production - are required to have a plan to manage farm nutrients.
All farm operations and equine operations are invited to attend these brief workshops. Those attending will be supplied with a manure management plan. They will have the opportunity to become familiar with the plan, begin filling it out and ask questions about the plan. Light refreshments will be provided will be provided at both meetings.
The first meeting will begin promptly at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, March 31st and is being held at the East Rush Church in East Rush Township on State Route 3023.
The second workshop will be held in the Susquehanna County Conservation District conference room located at 88 Chenango Street Montrose, PA. This meeting will be held on April 1st, 5:00 p.m. - 6:30 p.m.
The workshop will be held by Laura Holbrook, the Chesapeake Bay Technician/ Resource Conservationist.
