Wayne Memorial Requests Input

For the convenience of those who live and work in southern Wayne County Wayne Memorial Health System is expanding outpatient services by opening a facility at 543 Easton Turnpike in Hamlin.  The Hamlin Family Health Center, located in the former Hamlin Elementary School, will offer primary care (both by appointment and walk-in) and women’s health services as part of Wayne Memorial Community Health Centers (WMCHC).  Additionally, laboratory (blood draws) and radiology (general x-ray and ultrasound) services will be provided by Wayne Memorial Hospital.

With the building still in the renovation stages and the Center slated to open in spring of 2014, WMCHC is reaching out to residents to complete a survey to best determine the community’s needs.  The seven-question survey can be accessed from the WMCHC home page at www.wmh.org/WMCHC by clicking on the link Hamlin Family Health Center Survey.  The brief questionnaire takes no more than five minutes to complete and will be active until Friday, January 24, 2014.  A paper copy of the survey can be obtained by contacting the Wayne Memorial Public Relations Department at 570-253-8390.

Dining With Diabetes In Stevensville

Dining with Diabetes is a program for adults with type 2 diabetes. The program gives basic facts about how to manage diet and activity to control blood glucose levels. It offers support for persons making lifestyle changes. The program is also helpful to family members and persons at risk for developing diabetes. At the end of the program, many past participants say they are better managing their diet and exercising more. Several have had significant improvement in their blood glucose levels, which helps to prevent complications.

Penn State Extension offers the Dining with Diabetes Program. The program will begin in Stevensville on Tuesday, January 21. It will take place from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at the Stevensville Community Hall.

Dining with Diabetes is supported by the Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston, a world leader in diabetes care. Karen Johnson, a registered dietitian and personal trainer, and Cathy Guffey, extension nutrition educator, teach the program in this area.

The program consists of six classes. Two-hour classes meet once a week for five weeks with a follow-up class two months later. The first class gives details about the program and basic diabetes facts. A1c blood testing and blood pressure readings are taken. The next four classes focus on specific topics relating to diet. A1c blood testing and blood pressure readings are repeated during the follow-up class. A topic of the group’s choice is discussed. Each class also includes 10 minutes of low impact exercise, food demonstrations and tasting. Participants receive a pedometer, two exercise DVDs, recipes and more.

There is a fee for the program. Registration is free to those who receive Medicare or Medicaid benefits. Scholarships are available based on need.

Advance sign-up is needed. Register online at http://extension.psu.edu/diabetes/events or call toll free 1-855-394-7534. Class size is limited. Sign-ups will be accepted on a first come first served basis. Deadline to register is January 17.

Visit the website or contact Cathy Guffey at (570) 265-2896 or cbg1@psu.edu for more information.
