Robert E. Gilleran entered into his eternal rest after multiple illnesses on November 11, 2013 at Morton Plant Rehab Hospital. Born in Carbondale, PA to the late Loretta (Kelly) Gilleran and Robert Gilleran, he lived 80 years of his life on Little Ireland Road in Starrucca, PA. He is survived by his wife and best friend of over 59 years, Alice (Hobbs) Gilleran and 3 children; daughter Carol (John) Barnett, Berwick, PA and sons Robert (Rachael) Gilleran and James Gilleran, all of Starrucca, PA. Also surviving are 2 grandsons Ryan Gilleran and Jonathan (Libby) Barnett and 4 granddaughters Kristin (Pete) Lents, Sara (Andrew) Lawer, Meghan Gilleran and Jessica Plutino-Gilleran, 2 great grandchildren Garrett and Cassidy Lents and numerous cousins. Grandpa Bobbie was a true family man who loved and supported his family in every possible way.
A dairyman all his life, he took great pride in keeping his property looking beautiful. He served as a Thompson Township Supervisor for several years and was an Eastern Milk Producers delegate, representing the Starrucca-Lakewood local. He was a lifelong member of St. Paul’s Roman Catholic Church in Starrucca, PA. Bob was an avid sportsman who enjoyed bowling and golfing, as well as hunting with the other members of the Little Ireland Hunting Club. You would also find him at many school sporting events supporting his children, grandchildren and youth in general.
Due to ill health, Bob has spent the last 2 years in Largo, FL, to be close to his doctors and hospitals. He would want to thank his classmates and buddies from Thompson High School, Class of 1948 for calling and caring. He would want to give special thanks to his loyal caregiver Nick Natar, who came every morning and night for 18 months and to his cousin Father John King, Starrucca, PA, who came each Sunday to give him Holy Communion when he became unable to attend mass.
A memorial celebration of Bob’s life and internment in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Thompson, PA will take place at the convenience of the family. For those wishing to make a memorial contribution in Bob’s memory, please remember his love of animals, especially his dogs, and consider a gift to your local humane society.
