Blue Ridge To Perform Seussical
By Cayli Allen
On November 23rd and 24th, Dr. Seuss stories will come alive on the Blue Ridge stage! The middle school students in the Blue Ridge Theatre department are working hard on the upcoming musical, Seussical.
Seussical is a show about the characters in Dr. Seuss’s books. This musical will be direted by Ms. Amy Zakarauskus, the middle school and high school choir director. Cat in the Hat is played by Charlie Randall, Jojo will be rendered by Kaleb Folk, and Horton will be portrayed by Dakota Stoddard. The female leads are Gertrude McFuzz, rendered by Natasha Johnson, Mayzie La Bird being played by Sequoia Marriott, and Sour Kangaroo will be portrayed by Courtney Randall.
This year, high school students who help out as stage crew are now able to help out more than they have in the past. Zakarauskus said, “We have a lot of dedicated and talented high school students who have been looking for directing experience. In the future, I would like all middle school productions to be co-directed by a team of these students. So far they have assisted with sets, costumes, blocking scenes and later they will be doing make-up and hair. They are so excited about the process and have brought such a high level of enthusiasm and creativity to the process. Each lead in the show is assigned a high school "mentor" to help them with character development and it will be neat to see how this team effort helps the show blossom over the coming weeks.”
The co-director of Seussical is Julia Stanley, a junior at Blue Ridge. Her favorite part of being co-director is, “I love seeing the kids evolve over the weeks we spend rehearsing. Some of them come in timid and shy and uncomfortable in their own skin and come out confident and loving themselves. That's a big thing, loving yourself. It's one of the hardest things to do but theatre helps tenfold.”
Seussical will also be a part of the elementary students curriculum. Zakarauskus stated, “Every year the elementary school celebrates Dr. Seuss's birthday. We will incorporate the show into the elementary curriculum. The students will perform the show for the Pre-K-5 students and then do art/music/reading projects with them. It will be a great way for the older students to reach out to the younger students and maybe get the younger students interested in the theatre department.”
Also, there is a possible “meet the cast” event on November 24th starting at noon. This is an opportunity for audience members to meet and get their pictures taken with characters such as Horton, Cat in the Hat, and the Grinch. At the meet the cast event, there will also be food and arts and crafts projects to do.

BR Class Of 2015 To Hold Dinner
By Cayli Allen
Last year, two students from the Blue Ridge Class of 2015 passed away. On November 15, 2013, Tyler Gunn and Mahlon Mosher will be remembered with a spaghetti dinner that the Blue Ridge Class of 2015 is hosting.
The dinner is being held in the Blue Ridge Cafeteria from 5:30-8:00 and Pre-sale tickets are available from any member of the BR Class of 2015.
Half of the proceeds are benefiting the Autism Society in memory of Mahlon and the other half is being donated to the Tyler Gunn Memorial Scholarship Fund. Also there will be a 50/50 raffle held at the dinner.
Blue Ridge Class of 2015 advisor, Mr. Christopher Clark said, "I think the dinner will be a great time of remembering Mahlon and Tyler, and what better way to do it than by supporting Tyler’s scholarship fund and the Autism Society.”
Blue Ride High School principal, Mr. Matthew Nebzydoski is proud of the Class of 2015. "I am extremely proud of the junior class for seeking to honor the memories of their classmates through generating funds to support awareness and prevention." He also thinks that this will be a great way for the junior class to bond.
