The Harvest Moon Festival opens this weekend at Holy Name of Mary Church, 278 S. Main St., Montrose, from noon to 9 p.m., Oct 12 and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Oct 13 on the grounds of the Fr. Jim Nash Parish Center.
JC’s Café - located in the St. Francis Chapel offers coffee, teas and sumptuous, homemade desserts in an intimate setting.
The Harvest Moon Festival strives to be a family affair by offering a multitude of fun games, challenges and amusements for all ages. Children’s activities and adult games will be available both days on the Festival grounds.
Chaperoned fire truck rides, offered through the generosity of the United Fire Co. of Montrose and volunteering firefighters, are not just for kids so plan to make it a family affair.
New this year at HNM Harvest Moon Festival is a “White Elephant” sale on the parish center porch. Collecting and sorting gently used items for this popular bargain basement event has kept volunteers busy. Reasonable offers considered on all items.
No festival would be complete without the temping allure of fresh baked goods. The multi-talented bakers of HNM are dusting off recipes and preparing the oven for some taste-temping treats including cakes, pies, cookies, muffins, cup cakes, breads, and maybe even biscotti.
Try your luck to win a handmade quilt, afghan or a Harvest Basket brimming with Fall treasures all donated by parishioners. Check out the other seasonal crafts, wreaths, ornaments, jewelry, knitted/crocheted items, or ceramics. A few local vendors/crafters will also be showing their wares on the Festival grounds.
Whether large or small, luck is your key to taking home an appealing theme basket. A small investment may reap a huge reward at the basket table. Previously the Festival has awarded up to four baskets to one winner.
Wheelbarrow of Cash - Just imagine claiming your own wheelbarrow full of cash. If not the whole wheelbarrow stuffed with $500, then a smaller cash prize of $250 or $100 could be yours with a little help from ‘Lady Luck’.

Eat in or take out, the homemade, ethnic food is a treat for any appetite. This year’s international flair includes Pasta Fagioli, New England calm chowder, halupki, haluski, sausage & peppers, Arincini DeRosa, (rice balls), chicken tenders, hamburgs, French fries, meatballs, hot dogs, pirogies, pizza frittes and more.
The Festival’s adult beverage tent is reminiscent of the world-renowned international Beer Gardens where patrons gather in the great outdoors to toast the Harvest and salute the summer’s end with food and drink.
A Youth Talent Show will highlight local talent 1-4 p.m. on Saturday.
Following the Talent Show for your listening pleasure is the well-known ‘Lonnie Griffiths Band’ followed by ‘Sonny on the Causeway’ presenting music from the 70’s through the 90’s. Sunday’s music features singer/songwriter Leland Smith and later in the day ‘Fish ‘N Friends’ entertains with ever-popular Bluegrass.
Patrons are a necessary part of the festival’s success and their business names are proudly proclaimed throughout the festival grounds as a thank-you for making the Harvest Moon Festival a reality this year.
Holy Name of Nary Catholic Church is a welcoming community. For information, call 570-278-1504.
