Clifford Twp. Historical To Hold Wine Fest

The Clifford Twp. Historical Society will be hosting an old fashioned, relaxing, afternoon Wine fest at the Creekside Grove, 1/4 mile east of Exit 206 (Lenoxville) off I-81 with grove owners, Rich and Diane Bidwell on Sunday, October 6 from noon till 6. Rain or Shine. Large pavilion and tents on site. This event will be the main fundraiser for the societies renovation project of the yarns cider mill in Clifford Township.

Apples were in abundance because Adam Miller, the first settler in the Clifford area, planted apple trees through the area. When the Yarns family operated their mill it provided vinegar, cider (hard Cider) and apple pulp –all essential commodities in the late 1800 to mid 1900’s. All the original pressing equipment is still in the mill waiting to be brought back into service. During Prohibition and the Great Depression men would ride the rails to Carbondale and Forest City, then walk to area farms where they would exchange a days labor for a meal cooked by the farmers wife and a” go at the barrel” before bedding down in the hay mow. Walter Cook told us, as a young boy, he could remember several men helping his dad with the farm work for years and years – being paid only the cider kept safe in the cellar of their house. He said each farmer had their own recipe to make a special taste, some used empty coke barrels from the local pharmacy others a special mixture of available herbs and grains. Businesses in town also supplied their workers Clifford cider – a welcome benefit.

Our Winefest will bring back those old days. Come in period costume and receive a free gift. Of course there will be wine tasting and hard ciders, regular cider, lemonade and Octoberfest beers to sample and purchase. The Sunday Social atmosphere of the Winefest will provide Horse drawn carriage rides, Harp music to totally relax you while you enjoy a massage for your stiff neck, toe tapping old time fiddle music from 2:30 to 5:30, horeshoes, bocci, golf putting, volleyball, croquet, a pumpkin sling, food, a chocolate fountain and silent auction. Over a dozen vendors will be selling their wares. And local wineries will provide the best of their products.

For info go to www.cliffordpa.com or call 570-679-2723 or 570-497-0457. Donated items for our silent auction would be most appreciated, contact ljparlanti@gmail.com.

Forestry Group Plans Fall Foliage Tour

The 2013 Susquehanna County Forest Landowners Association (SCFLOA) annual Columbus Day fall foliage bus trip stays home this year to view and enjoy the magnificent features and coloration of Susquehanna County. Many who have traveled to New England to view fall foliage have returned and declared that our own Susquehanna County foliage is just as spectacular, if not better. Our diversity of hardwoods creates a panorama of color unrivaled by areas with fewer species. This unique local tour is designed to spend less time on the road and have opportunity for local history and a great view from the top of Elk Mountain.

The first part of the tour will be a leisurely ride through some of the western, northern and central parts of the county. Stops and sights on this part of the tour include: 1) the Danny Crisman 9/11 Memorial in South Montrose; 2) a great view from the agriculturally preserved farm of the Lou Hawley family;  3) several nice views westward to Bradford County along the Irish Hill Road; 4) fall scenes along Quaker and Laurel lakes; 5) Milk Can Corners and; 6) views to the east from the Mt. View School where you can see Elk Mt. and windmills on the distant horizon.

Retired forester and long time county resident Jim Kessler will provide an informational and interesting dialogue explaining the topography, soils, and other conditions that contribute to the varying leaf colorations. Jim’s knowledge, combined with his ability to tell a story, will provide both humor and education as we tour the back roads of the county.

The next portion of the trip takes us south eastward to Clifford where we will visit the Clifford Historical Museum to view their efforts to preserve local history. The next item on the agenda is lunch  at the “new” View Restaurant, included in the tour cost.

After lunch we head to the Elk Mountain Ski Resort. The ski lift will transport us to the top of Elk Mountain, from where a 360 degree panorama of the fall foliage can be enjoyed! On a clear day, parts of 5 or more counties can be observed, as well as glimpses into New York State.

The final leg of our journey offers still more spectacular panoramas of Susquehanna county along a rural ridge top road in Ararat and Thompson townships. Our return trip will have one final view of Elk Mt. and the forest and farmland countryside near Jackson. A 5PM return to Montrose is planned.

The tour will leave the parking lot behind the County Office Building in Montrose promptly at 8 a.m. on Monday, October 14. Toilet facilities will be available on the bus, and the Association will provide complimentary cold drinks. Reservations for this enjoyable trip must be made by Oct 8, 2013.

There is a cost for this trip. Any questions can be answered by SCFLOA President Jim James at 570-289-4935.
