Reed H. Burman

Reed H. Burman, 96, of Ararat Township, PA passed away at his home Thursday morning, May 23, 2013. He was born in Ararat Township on August 7, 1916, the son of Emerett and Lorraine Keenan Burman.

Reed was preceded in death by his first wife of 38 years, Harriet Cook Burman, sons James and Gerald Reed Burman, 2 grand-children, Lauren and Matthew, his great-grandson Jake Burman and his second wife of 21 years, Marion Slocum Bedford Burman. He was also preceded by his brother Myles, and by his two sisters, Isabelle Butler and Kathryn Conrad.

He is survived by two sons and three daughters-in-law; David and Dianne Burman of Ararat, PA, Ivan and Elaine Burman of Ararat, PA and Bonnie McCall of Atco, NJ, four grandchildren, Michael Burman and wife, Dawn of Atco, NJ, Michelle Burman and husband, Mark of Atco, NJ, Jeff Burman and Jennifer, of Union Dale, PA, and Scott Burman of Ararat, PA; eight great-grandchildren, Corey and Garrett Timberlake, Joshua, Corrine, Isabelle, Benjamin, Nicholas and Andrew, a great-great grandson, Jordan. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Alice Machalek of Binghamton, NY and his beloved dog, Lady and his cat, Kitten.

Reed was a dairy farmer, rural letter carrier for 35 years and a lifelong business man. He owned and operated a trucking business, delivering hay, coal, fertilizer and other products. He took great pride in the reputation and success of Burman’s Maple Products, in which he was a partner with his son, David, seeing it grow from a small family hobby and becoming one of the region’s largest producers and distributors of maple products and production equipment. He enjoyed socializing while marketing maple products at various events.

Reed served as secretary of the Ararat Township Board of Supervisors for 34 years. He was County Compliance Supervisor for the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Soil Bank, and Feed Grain Program. He was a member of the Ararat United Methodist Church, a 50+ year member and Past Master of Mount Hermon Lodge #472, Free and Accepted Masons of Pennsylvania, a 60+ year member and Past Master of Gibson Grange #798, a Past Master of Susquehanna County Pamona Grange #7, Pennsylvania State Grange Deputy Master, served as a director for GLF and Agway, on the board of the American Dairy Council, the Dairyman’s League, a director for Eastern Breeders Association, a 4H leader, a member of the NEPA Maple Producers Association, a member of the Sons of the Union Veterans, Lt. Ezra S. Griffin Camp #8, earning that honor through his grandfather, Private George H. Burman, Co. A, 56th Regiment. He also served for over 25 years as a volunteer for the Meals-on-Wheels program until the age of 93. He enjoyed his tractors and working on the farm. Reed took great pride in owning the Burman Homestead Century Farm longer than any other family member since it was established in 1867. Reed frequently enjoyed attending church dinners and pancake suppers, and his presence will be missed by many.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, May 28, 2013, from 6:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M. at the Hennessey’s Funeral Home, 747 Jackson Avenue, Susquehanna, PA 18847. A Masonic funeral service will be conducted at 7:30 P.M., on Tuesday, May 28, 2013. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, May 29, 2013, at 10:00 A.M., at the Hennessey’s Funeral Home, with Rev. Lloyd Canfield officiating. Interment will be at the Ararat Cemetery on Ridge Road in Ararat Township.

Mary Connelly McCormick

Mary Connelly McCormick, 95, of Susquehanna, died peacefully on Thursday, May 23, 2013 with her granddaughter at her side.

She was predeceased by her parents, Patrick and Gertrude Connelly, her husband and soul-mate, Paul McCormick, March 16, 2007, and her only son, Patrick McCormick, March 15, 1997.

She is survived by her daughter-in-law Terry Ann McCormick, her grandchildren, Todd McCormick and Dan and Tracey (McCormick) Buckley, as well as great-grandchildren Sydney and Alexis Buckley.

Mary taught in the Blue Ridge School District for 35 years, and spoke of those years fondly. After retirement, Mary and Paul spent many years traveling with friends, enjoying their family, playing cards with friends, dancing, and volunteering. Mary was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma, the St. John’s Church in Susquehanna, PA, and the Alter and Rosary Society. She was an amazing woman that had a tremendous faith in God, an abundance of strength and class, and always an extra chair at her dining room table. We will miss her and are so thankful for the time we had.

We would like to thank the nurses and staff at Ideal Senior Living for their kindness, care, and support during Mary’s last years.

A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at the St. John’s Church in Susquehanna, PA, on Tuesday, May 28, 2013.

Walter “Stosh” Stein

Walter “Stosh” Stein, 90, died Sunday at Barnes Kasson Hospital in Susquehanna, PA after a short illness.

He was born on March 14, 1923, the youngest son of the late Walter and Helen “Szymborski” Stein. Stosh was a lifelong resident of the area and took great pride in his hometown of Susquehanna, PA.

Stosh graduated from the Laurel Hill Academy. He was proud of his Army Air Corp service to his country in World War II. Stosh served in the 389th Bomb Group as a tail gunner, flying 30 missions in the European Theatre.

After serving in the military, he met the love of his life, Carolina Dantini. Stosh and Carolina married on June 30, 1951, and spent 61 years together. His greatest source of pride and joy are his two sons, who carry on his memory, Dick and wife Mary Beth, of East Hampton, MA, and Phil and wife, Liese, of Susquehanna, PA. Stosh greatly treasured his three grandchildren Jenny, Amy, and Ashley, as well as his many nieces and nephews.

Stosh was preceded in death by his brothers, Raymond and Edward.

Stosh had a long career as a carman and retired from Conrail after 37 years. He was also an avid sportsman. For many years he encouraged youth to participate in sports. He was actively involved in little league, baseball, football, and basketball. Stosh was known as the fairest high school PIAA basketball referee.

The foundation of Stosh’s life was his Catholic faith, his family, his many friends, being a WWII veteran, and his Polish heritage. Stosh was a lifelong member of the American Legion Post 86, Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge 794, and a life member of the VFW Post 6223.

The Stein family would like to express its deepest gratitude to Dr. B. Patel and the Staff of Barnes Kasson Hospital. Words cannot adequately convey out appreciation for what you have done.

The Mass of Resurrection to celebrate the life to Walter Stein will be offered on May 31, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. at the St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. Interment will follow at the St. John’s Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army, 3-5 Griswold St. Binghamton, NY 13901.

JANET S. WALKER

Janet S. Walker, 86, of Brushville, PA went to be with her loved ones in heaven on Sunday, May 19, 2013.  She was predeceased by her husband of 51 years, Eugene T. Walker in 2000.  She was the daughter of the late Ralph and Bessie Whitney Slocum.  She is also predeceased by a daughter, Laura, who died at birth, and two sisters, Corinne Pickering and Joan Walworth.

Janet is survived by six children and their spouses, Barbara and Donald Perrington, Eugene and Julie Walker, Beverly and Lloyd Sheldon, James and Donna Walker, Carolyn and Jeff Hall, Jennifer and Todd Schmidt; twenty grandchildren; eighteen great grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family members. Janet worked devotedly with her husband on their dairy farm.  She was a member of Dairylea, the Susquehanna United Methodist Church, and a leader of the Maple Ridge 4H Club.  Janet also served as director of the Lamb Cemetery Association.  She enjoyed gardening, mending, and jigsaw puzzles.  Janet used her gift of encouragement writing letters and sending cards.  She was always willing to help whenever and where ever needed.  She faithfully served her husband and her family, others always came first.  One could not leave her house without a bag of homemade cookies.

A funeral service was held Friday, May 24, 2013 at the South New Milford Baptist Church.  Interment made in Lamb Cemetery.
