On November 17-18, there were two places to be if you were one of the elite high school debaters in the country: suburban Chicago or suburban Philadelphia.
The Elk Lake Forensics Team chose the latter and attended the 33rd Annual St Joseph’s University Villiger Speech and Debate Tournament with the hopes of getting rounds of tough competition against the best debaters from 9 states in the northeast region of the country.
What the team got was two of the top 32 debaters, including the overall champion, in the tournament.
Senior Austin Cohen dominated the field and captured the overall title while senior Matthew Horvath, in only his second year in debate, advanced to the round of 32.

Pictured are EL Forensics Team Place Winners at 33rd Annual St. Joseph’s University Forensics Tournament: Matthew Horvath – 29th in Lincoln-Douglas Debate; Austin Cohen – 1st Place in Lincoln-Douglas Debate.
During the 5 preliminary rounds, Cohen put up a record of 4 wins and 1 loss by defeating debaters from Truman (PA), Hunter College (NY), Delbarton (NJ), and Regis (NY) High Schools. His only loss came to Robert Gormisky from LaSalle College HS.
As a result of his record, Cohen would enter the round of 32 as the 4th seeded debater.
Horvath put together a preliminary record of 3 wins and two losses by defeating debaters from Loyola Blakefield (MD) and Hunter College (NY). His two losses came to debaters from Hunter College (NY) and Regis (NY) High Schools.
His preliminary round record placed him as the 29th seeded debater. Unfortunately, for the Round of 32, Horvath was seeded against Cohen. As a result of his higher initial seeding, EL Forensics Director Keith Brosious advanced Cohen to the Octo-Final Round.
Cohen would run off unanimous decision wins in Octo-Finals, Quarter Finals and Semi-Finals over debaters from Shrewsbury (MA), Hunter College (NY), and Regis (NY) High Schools respectively.
His Semi-Final win would advance him into a Final Round against Gina Li from Blacksburg HS (VA).
Cohen dominated the round and won another unanimous decision and the tournament championship.
The only ballot Cohen lost was in the fourth round.
“Impressive. There is simply no other word for his performance at this tournament,” commented Brosious who watched the Cohen’s Final Round.
Cohen’s record on the season is 18 wins and 2 losses. He has won 3 consecutive tournament championships in LD. He became the first debater from Pennsylvania in 10 years to win LD at Villiger and only the 5th in the state to win in the 33 year history of the tournament.
The team will compete at home on December 1 as Elk Lake hosts the Scranton CFL Tournament that weekend.
