Beta Rho Chapter Awards Grant

Each year the Beta Rho Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International awards a grant in aid to a college student who is studying in the field of education. This year’s awardee is Laura Kate Davis who is a graduate of Tunkhannock Are High School. She has a dual major in Environmental Resource Management and Agriculture and Extension Education at Penn State University. In addition, she has minors in International Agriculture and Sustainability Leadership. Prior to attending Penn State, Laura graduated from the Honors Program at Keystone College with a major in Biological Science. She was awarded the Division of Natural Sciences and Mathematics Outstanding Student Award for Environmental Resource Management.

Laura has an impressive list of memberships which include the Eco Club while at Keystone College. At Penn State she is a member of the International Association for Students in Agriculture and Related Sciences (IAAS), the College of Agriculture Student Council, Gamma Sigma Delta Honor Society of the Agricultural Sciences, and Alpha Tau Alpha Honorary Agricultural Education Organization. She volunteers with the Clearwater Conservancy’s Annual Spring Creek Festival, the Children’s International Fair, Benton High School Environthon, and NRCS Earth Team Volunteer. She is employed as a Soils Lab Assistant at Penn State University.

Laura is the daughter of Carol and Marshall Davis in Tunkhannock. Her mother is the Director at Keystone College Oppenheim Children’s Center, Adjunct Instructor at the college, and treasurer of Beta Rho Chapter. Beta Rho’s membership is composed of women educators from Bradford, Sullivan, Susquehanna, and Wyoming Counties. One of the seven purposes of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, representing key women teachers in 17 countries throughout Europe, Canada, Latin America, and the United States, is to endow scholarships and enrichment grants to its members and students in education.

Harford Fair Scholarship Fund Increases

The scholarship fund benefited from several events at the Harford Fair this year. On Monday all of the first and second place baked goods including pies, cakes, and yeast breads were auctioned to the public under the Shade Pavilion. It not only added money to the fund, it was a fun time for those who participated and those who were spectators. A total of $1,780.00 was raised during the auction with a layered chocolate cake bringing $200.00.

Pictured is The Joseph Targi family from Secaucus, New Jersey, who outbid others during the auction at the Harford Fair to become the owners of the lovely stained glass panel which was created during a full-day demonstration at the fair. The piece was donated by Tingley Glass and the $700.00 which it sold for went directly to the Harford Fair Scholarship Fund.

Valerie and Jim Coles, owners of Wiffy Bog Farm Bed and Breakfast in West Clifford, bought a variety of prize-winning baked goods for $362.50. Following the auction, they said that they love to support the fair and especially the youth involved in the fair. They said they couldn’t buy an animal which was sold during the 4-H auction on Saturday but could contribute by bidding and buying baked goods. Greenfield Power Equipment outside of Carbondale was the second highest spender for the auction totaling $327.20 for their items.

More money was added to the scholarship fund on Saturday when the stained glass panel which was created during an all-day demonstration in the new Fine Arts area was auctioned. Jan Winemiller, owner of Tingley Glass in Harford, and Gwenyth Steele graciously donated their time to create the lovely panel using only glass and soldering materials made in America. The glass panel featured an antler deer head surrounded by shades of green and brown. Over 200 pieces of glass made up the panel which sold for $700.00 at the auction and was bought by the Joseph Targi’s family from Secaucus, New Jersey proudly outbid others to take home the lovely one-of-a-kind piece. Additional money was raised for scholarships from the auction of the wood carvings created during the week by chainsaw carver, Kevin Treat. .

Applications for the scholarships were due on September 1st. A committee will review the applications and select the winners. The scholarships will be awarded at the annual Harford Fair Banquet which will be held at Dreyer Hall in Montrose on October 1, 2012, at 6:30 PM.
