United Way Begins Fall Campaign
The United Way of Susquehanna County (UWSC) has announced its 2012-2013 Fall Campaign with a goal of $350,000. The campaign will be highlighted by an open house on October 24 to thank area businesses, donors and volunteers, and to celebrate the 125th anniversary of United Way and the 10 year anniversary of the UWSC.
Campaign chair Tom Chamberlain says the 2012 goal has never been greater. “While the gas industry has provided a lift to the county, a lot of our citizens are struggling to cope with higher housing, food, and energy costs. And weather disasters are occurring more frequently and with greater intensity have become pretty much an annual event - helping those affected costs a lot of money, almost $50,000 from last year’s storms alone” was given to help our community rebuild.
The UWSC channels donations to 22 local not-for-profit agencies. In addition to helping to finance emergency agencies like the Red Cross, Interfaith, and Salvation Army, one donation to the UWSC also means funding for organizations supporting education and youth activities, three providing help for the needy, as well as for others offering health services for women children and seniors, protection for animals and the environment, and cultural programs.
Greg Banks, UWSC’s executive director, says this year’s campaign will stress “the ABC’s. We plan to: Ask people who live in Susquehanna County, but work outside Susquehanna County to donor designate their giving to the United Way of Susquehanna County; Bring new donors to the campaign; and Call on current and new donors to increase their pledges.”
Much of the work of the UWSC is done by volunteers who help with on-line and social media posts, reaching out to donors, and providing helping hands in the office for fundraisers and other activities. “We can use all of the volunteers we can get,” says Chamberlain.
Anyone interested in donating, finding out more about USWC and its partners, or how to become a volunteer, can stop in at the office at 693 Main Street, New Milford; call at 570-465-7605 or log into the USWC website: unitedwayofsusquehannacounty.org or visit on Facebook. The UWSC is available to assist in coordinating an employer worksite campaign. Please call to arrange.
