Dooley Interns At LCC Institute

Lynette Dooley of New Milford, a sophomore biology major, is one of 12 interns assisting Drs. Mel Zimmerman and Peter Petokas at Lycoming College's Clean Water Institute this summer.

Projects include surveys of healthy crayfish and eastern hellbender populations in north-central Pennsylvania streams, evaluations of trout populations in unassessed waters of the Pine Creek and Lycoming Creek watersheds, water quality monitoring of the lower West Branch Susquehanna River, analysis of the impact and recovery of fish populations in two streams affected by Sept. 2011 flooding in the Loyalsock Creek watershed, and the monitoring of water quality before and after best management practices are established on farms in the White Deer Hole Creek watershed.

The internships were made possible through grants totaling over $30,000 and support from the Degenstein Foundation, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Foundation, the Pine Creek Headwaters Protection Group, the Pine Creek Preservation Association, the Lycoming County Conservation District and the Susquehanna River Heartland Coalition for Environmental Studies.

In addition to performing in a variety of venues in London and Paris, France, the band hopes to visit Cambridge U.S. Military Cemetery to play and perform a wreath-laying ceremony.

"For most of the students this will be their first opportunity to travel abroad," Adam Brennan, director of Bands, said. "To do so during the Olympics makes this a particularly exciting and educational opportunity."
