Harford Fair Accepting School House Entries

With only five weeks of school left across the county, now is the time to gather those school projects you have been saving all year for the Harford Fair and to submit your entry blank. The school department at the Harford Fair exhibits up to 2,000 items from all age levels pre-school to twelfth grade the third full week of August each year. It is an excellent way to exhibit children’s work.

Teachers can enter items from their classrooms, home schooled children can enter projects, and parents can enter items for their children. Go to the Harford Fair website www.harfordfair.com and click on School House at the top. The general rules will be displayed and then click on section and class for the listing of classes of items for each grade level. Once you have decided what items you are entering you will need to submit an entry blank to the fair office. This can be done electronically or by regular mail. Be sure to use the correct entry blank when submitting items and these, too, are available on the website.

Pictured: Hayley Pompey was a Mountain View student in kindergarten when her magic marker drawing won first place at the Harford Fair. Entry blanks in the School Department for this year’s fair are due July 2, 2012.

Once you submit your entry blank, the tags for the items will be mailed to you or you can pick them up at the fair office. Items in the school department must be brought to the fair between 9:00 AM and noon on Tuesdays June 19 and/or July 10th. New faces will greet you in the school building this year. Dominica Skal and Tonya Molenko are the new co-superintendents of the department and both are teachers in the Blue Ridge Elementary School.

After thirty-two years as superintendent of the school department, Cindy Reynolds is stepping down but will continue her dedication to the fair as a member of the board of directors writing articles and working with the media.

Start planning now. The Harford Fair is a wonderful family event and there is something for young and old alike. Get everyone involved in this the 155th Harford Fair, August 20-25th. The School Department is just one of the 23 departments which exhibit items during the fair.

Oakland Girls Choir To Perform Locally

The Oakland Girls Choir from the Pittsburgh Area will be performing at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 19, 2012 at the First Presbyterian Church, Church St., Montrose, PA, as part of their summer tour. The concert features the Tour Choir and Chamber Choir ensembles in an inspirational spring concert which includes "I Never Saw Another Butterfly" by Charles Davidson and a show-stopping spiritual "Ain't No Grave" by Paul Caldwell and Sean Ivory. Starting School? Here’s A ‘Dress-Rehearsal’

New Milford, PA - Families with children starting kindergarten or pre-kindergarten at any one of the six school districts in Susquehanna County are invited to participate in a unique program to ease those first time jitters. Susquehanna County CARES is once again hosting T.A.P.S. or Transition Activities for Parents and Students. Through five evening sessions starting June 18, children and their parents can experience what it is like to go to school.

Children involved in the program meet with early education teachers in a classroom setting. The teachers focus on skills needed to foster school success. While the youngsters enjoy a school ‘dry-run,’ their parents meet with a special facilitator to examine issues that affect parenting success. There are also group activities and everyone enjoys free books, snacks, giveaways and extra surprises.

Parents and children must attend all five sessions at Blue Ridge Elementary School on June 18, 20, 25, 27 and July 2. T.A.P.S. runs each night from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

While the program is free, pre-registration is required by May 30, 2012. Space is limited. Reserve a spot for you and your child by contacting Susquehanna County CARES at (570) 465-5040 or stcares@epix.net. CARES is part of Pennsylvania’s LEARN initiative promoting quality childcare and early education in Susquehanna County.
