Author’s Luncheon To Benefit Library The Library Friends invite you to come spend an afternoon with “Ask Amy.” Their third annual Local Author’s Luncheon will be on Wednesday, May 18 at The Summit Tea Room on Route 11 in New Milford. This year’s guest speaker will be Amy Dickinson, author of “The Mighty Queens of Freeville” and the syndicated columnist known as “Ask Amy.” The program to benefit the Susquehanna County Library begins at 11:30 a.m. with an informal, hospitality time. A sit-down luncheon will be served at 12:30 p.m. and Ms. Dickinson will speak at 1:30. She will also be autographing copies of her book. Reservation deadline is May 12. Ms. Dickinson’s memoir is the story of surprising second chances. It explores her roots, her journey to rebuild her life after a failed marriage, and her return to her rural hometown. Her book recounts her struggles as a single mother and reminds you of the importance of power of family and the people around you. In addition to her “Ask Amy” column, Ms. Dickinson is a featured panelist on NPR’s game show “Wait, Wait…Don’t Tell.” She also writes an additional column for the Chicago Tribune. She lives in Chicago and Freeville, New York. Freeville is a very small town (population 454) located just outside of Ithaca. Registration forms are available online at www.susqcolibrary.org/luncheon, or at any of the Susquehanna County Library locations (Montrose, Hallstead/Great Bend, Susquehanna or Forest City).

HARRISBURG - The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC) has established Saturday, April 16, as the opening day of trout season for most Pennsylvania counties, said Rep. Tina Pickett (R-Bradford/Sullivan/Susquehanna). Opening day is one of the biggest fishing days of the year. The PFBC has been busy since mid-February stocking area lakes and streams with a fresh supply of brook, brown and rainbow trout. Every year, the PFBC stocks nearly 3.2 million trout in waterways across the state. However, opening day occurred on April 2 for 18 counties in the southeastern part of the state, including Adams, Berks, Bucks, Chester, Cumberland, Dauphin, Delaware, Franklin, Juniata, Lancaster, Lebanon, Lehigh, Montgomery, Northampton, Perry, Philadelphia, Schuylkill and York. Anglers must purchase a fishing license to fish in these southeastern counties. A license is required for anyone 16 and older. Licenses can be purchased at local sporting goods stores or online at fishandboat.com. To see if local streams have been stocked, visit RepPickett.com and click on “Trout Stocking Schedules” or visit Pickett’s offices at 321 Main St. in Towanda or 106 West Packer Avenue in Sayre to pick up a copy of the 2011 Trout Stocking Schedule.
Webinar: Understanding Income Taxes UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Millions of Americans complain that they pay too much in income taxes but get a large refund annually because they overpaid their tax bill. A Web-based seminar series sponsored by Penn State's College of Agricultural Sciences will help taxpayers understand the basics of federal and state taxing systems and legal ways to pay no more than their fair share. "Understanding Income Taxes: What you don't know could cost you" is a five-part program designed to help taxpayers understand basic principles relating to income taxes. The presenters - Robin Kuleck, director of Penn State Extension in Elk County and a certified financial planner, and Cathy Bowen, professor of agricultural and extension education - use their experience assisting taxpayers with filing income tax returns to explain key concepts about the taxation process using IRS forms and nontechnical language. "While income tax filing season is coming to a close, that does not mean you should put your returns in storage and forget about taxes until the next filing season," said Bowen. "In fact, now is an ideal time to review this year's tax return and plan for possible ways to cut next year's tax bill. If you wait until Dec. 31, it will be too late. Review your return and look for opportunities to make changes so you pay only your fair share next year." The program addresses federal income tax basics using Form 1040 and Pennsylvania income taxes. Practical strategies to maximize tax benefits are a detailed component of the program that should benefit taxpayers. Participants will complete the five sessions of the program on a self-paced basis. To register, visit the program site online at http://guest.cvent.com/d/bdq6hw.
