HEADLINES Dressed in pajamas featuring everything from spider-man to pigs, and carrying everything from blankets to teddy bears, children gathered at Blue Ridge Elementary School February 16 for a special fun-filled event. “Bedtime Stories at Blue Ridge” provided the opportunity for families to spend an evening dining together, making a craft and enjoying a special story. Pictured above, Alanna Thornton pretends to be a Moose. Students from the National Honor Society at Blue Ridge helped make the evening possible by receiving food donations and coordinating events based on the book “If you Give a Moose a Muffin” by Laura Numeroff. Young children and adults enjoyed making moose sock puppets, wearing pretend moose antlers to walk through a make-shift forest, and listening to the moose antics in the story. “Bedtime Stories at Blue Ridge” was made possible through a joint effort with National Honor Society at Blue Ridge, the Blue Ridge School District and Susquehanna County CARES (Childcare, Agencies, Resources and Educational Services.) CARES is a non-profit group dedicated to enhancing quality early care and education in the county, and supports Pennsylvania’s Promise for Children, because every child is Pennsylvania’s future.
EL Forensics Team Dominant At Districts The Elk Lake Forensics Team walked into the PA High School Speech League District 8 Speech and Debate Championships at Abington Heights on February 26 on a roll and walked out with 3 qualifiers, one a District Champion to the PHSSL State Championship Tournament on March 25-26 at Susquehanna University. Pictured above, Elk Lake Forensics Team District Champions at the PHSSL District 8 Tournament: Shea Skinner, 2nd place in Lincoln-Douglas Debate; Austin Cohen, District Champion in Lincoln-Douglas Debate; Richard Guiton, 2nd place in Commentary. Sophomore Austin Cohen and senior Shea Skinner dominated Lincoln-Douglas Debate. Both debaters were undefeated, 4 wins and 0 losses, against debaters from Meyers, Southern Lehigh, and Abington Heights High Schools. As a result of median speaker points, Cohen edged out Skinner to capture the District Championship. Both debaters, however, qualified to the PHSSL State Championship Tournament. Last season, the two debaters reversed the order of finish with Skinner finishing as the District Champion. In Commentary, Elk Lake’s third debater, Richard Guiton, was successful for the second consecutive year at Districts in an event that he only does once a year. Guiton advanced to Finals as the second seed during the preliminary rounds. In Finals, he maintained his preliminary round seeding. His second place finish earned him a slot in Commentary at the PHSSL State Championship Tournament. “This is another excellent performance by the debaters. They put a lot of work in to get ready for this tournament. Ricky really stepped up and prepared well for an event that he is unfamiliar with,” commented EL Forensics Director Keith Brosious. The EL Forensics Team will travel to the Scranton Catholic Forensics League Tournament on March 5 at Dallas High School. The top 4 finishers in each event will earn a trip to the NCFL Grand National Tournament over Memorial Day Weekend in Washington DC.

Production Sheds Light On Schools’ Concerns The Mountain View Elementary School Players will present Will Hagenbuch’s original play, “Eddy to Edison,” on March 4 and 5 at 7 p.m. in the elementary school’s gym. Using a young Tom Edison as an example, this historical fiction piece touches something all schools in our area are facing, budget cuts. “Thomas himself overcame great obstacles,” Hagenbuch says. “Schools today are feeling a crunch now, and this play offers hope for all ages through teamwork.” “Eddy to Edison” cast members dressed in costume before the set. Hagenbuch’s fifth original play for his alma mater follows its predecessors in that it presents a solid message behind both fun and humor. “The kids really rock this script and the songs,” Hagenbuch says. “It’s great to see this talent have the chance to perform.” Music Director Robert Fisher and Stage Manager Cheryl Mecca agree; that students learn through the arts about real life situations is a definite bonus. Fifth grader Riley Cameron, who plays the character Shawna Shopper, admits she’s more confident through this experience. She shares, “even though you might only have one line, make it big.” Madison Ware, who as a sixth grader portrays the character Claire Crossing Guard, agrees with her fellow actress. She adds that “through practices, I’ve really learned to express myself and can be both wild and nice.” See what this fun cast can teach us. Shows are open for all.
