Students attend a day of workshops presented by children’s authors, illustrators, poets, and local presenters. Students are recommended by their classroom teacher and submit a piece of original written work which is published on a CD given to all participants.

The featured authors for this year were Judy Young who specializes in writing children’s poetry along with Lindsay Barrett George, a local children’s author and illustrator. Students had the opportunity to meet these authors and have books autographed by them. When asked what they liked best or learned from attending Young Authors’ Day, Kyra Powell replied, “I loved getting my book signed by Judy Young and learning about what kinds of poetry there are.” When asked what aspect of their writing are the students most proud of, Abbie Hartman said, “I am most proud of my voice and my humor in my writing.” Young Authors’ Day proved to be an educational and fun event for all. Blue Ridge Elementary is proud of their student authors!

Another Closeout For EL Debaters

For the third consecutive tournament, the Elk Lake Forensics Team closed out the finals in Lincoln-Douglas Debate.

At the 32nd Annual James M. Langan Tournament at Scranton High School on November 13-14, EL Debaters Shea Skinner and Austin Cohen advanced to Finals in Varsity LD Debate and were declared Co-Champions.

EL Forensics Team place-winners at Langan Invitational: Austin Cohen, Co-Champion in Varsity Lincoln-Douglas Debate and 4th place Speaker; and Shea Skinner, Co-Champion in Varsity Lincoln-Douglas Debate and 1st place Speaker.

Senior Shea Skinner, in his first tournament of the season, dominated the strong regional field of debaters by compiling a 4 win and 1 loss record in the preliminary rounds by defeating debaters from St. Josephs, Southern Lehigh, Delbarton, and Danville High Schools. His only loss came in the fifth round to a debater from Newburgh Free Academy.

As a result of his record, Skinner was the top seed in Quarter-Finals. Skinner also led the field of debaters in total speaker points and won the Top Debate Speaker Award.

In Quarter-Finals, Skinner defeated Dmitro Martynowych from Danville High School and advanced to Semi-Finals where he defeated Jacob Jones from Southern Lehigh on a unanimous decision to advance to the Finals.

Sophomore Austin Cohen also continued his winning season by compiling a 4 win and 1 loss record in the preliminary rounds. His wins came against debaters from Delbarton, Danville, and Newburgh Free Academy High Schools. His only loss came to a debater from Southern Lehigh HS.

Cohen’s preliminary record and speaker point total resulted in a second seed in Quarter-Finals. In the Top Speaker Award competition, Cohen placed 4th.

In Quarter-Finals, Cohen defeated Delbarton’s Viveck Shimpi, who he had defeated in the second round of the tournament. In Semi-Finals, Cohen defeated Zach Schulyer from Newburgh Free Academy High School and advanced to Finals

“This was an incredible performance at a tough tournament. I could not have asked for more from these guys this weekend. Three closeouts is a feat that has never been accomplished on this team,” commented EL Forensics Director Keith Brosious.

The team will travel to Wallenpaupack High School on December 4 for a Scranton Catholic Forensics League Tournament.

Students Explore Health Careers

As part of Pennsylvania’s Health Careers Week 2010 celebration, over 75 high school students in Susquehanna and Wyoming County attended the Health Career Fair at the Susquehanna County Career and Technology Center on November 3. Students listened to health care professionals give a brief overview of their occupation after which they sat down and interviewed each professional about the details of their job. Post-secondary training providers were available to talk about the training programs they offered in the health care field.

Lisa Richner from Meadowview Senior Living Center talks to area students at the 2010 Health Career Fair.

The Health Career Fair featured representatives from Mercy Tyler Hospital, Lackawanna College, ProCare Physical Therapy, Endless Mts. Health Systems, Dr. Paul Kerr, NEPA AHEC, Johnson College, Luzerne Co. Community College, US Navy, CareGivers America, Meadowview Senior Living Center and Trehab Drug & Alcohol Counselors.

“Health care professionals play an important role in our society, and it’s important that our young people learn about these careers,” states Sherry Felten, Workforce Program Manager at Northern Tier Regional Planning and Development Commission. “Health Career Week activities help students explore what may be the right career for them and the solution to Pennsylvania’s shortage of health professionals.”

Health Careers Week is an annual event created to generate interest among youth in pursuing one of Pennsylvania’s exciting health care careers.
